As Honest As I Can Be

April 1, 2010 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

Just a few more days until Easter.  To be honest I’m an emotional mess for a number of reasons.  I think the primary reason is I realize this is my last big event for United.  For 3+ years we have worked together as a team to reach as many people for Jesus as possible.  Over 300 people have made 1st time professions, which is awesome but the work is far from done and I realize my influence on this community is quickly coming to a conclusion.  I want so bad for us to have one last big-time push to bring people to Jesus.

I’m also emotional because the team has been working nearly around the clock all this week to make sure the Easter Experiences this year are something memorable, impacting and life-changing.  When I think about what could be this Sunday I well up with emotion realizing that we’re doing all we can and just praying that you’re doing your part inviting as many people as possible to hear the Good News of Jesus victory over death and sin.

Finally I’m emotional because the devil isn’t happy about this and all week long as been doing all kinds of things in my life to try to stop this Sunday from being all that it can be.  Honestly constant spiritual warfare is draining, tiring and sometimes deflating.  I’m talking so bad that this week he’s been constantly whispering to me how bad I am, how my life isn’t making a difference and how I should just quit and do something else with my life.  Reading God’s word though reminds me that I am forgiven, more than a conqueror and a vital piece of the puzzle in seeing God’s kingdom come here in Chambersburg and beyond.

So with all that being said.  If you are a part of the United Worship Experience and really want to do something to make a difference in people’s lives and want to do something nice for me as a kind of going away present, then do whatever it takes this week to make sure you have at least 1 guest with you.  People’s eternal lives really do depend on what we together as a church accomplish.  Don’t let this just be another week or weekend that goes by without inviting those you know and love to come check out what it is that we do and more importantly who it is that we worship.  Jesus hanging on a cross was not comfortable, yet he did it anyway because He loves you.  Won’t you show your love in return by getting out of your comfort zone and inviting multiple people to come with you this week?

I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is God’s powerful method of bringing all who believe it to heaven.  –Romans 1:16

For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”  But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? -Romans 10:13-14

Inside Today’s Experiences

March 28, 2010 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • Wrapped up the Littlefaithers series today by looking at the story of Elijah.
  • Again I was able to come in a little later…I could get used to that.
  • Had some things today that were sloppy and that always drives me crazy…however for the most part it was a good day.
  • Had a guy at the second Experience that just moved here from Charlotte.  He has been attending Elevation Church.  I told him I’m no Steven Furtick but he came up afterwards and said he’d be back so I guess I didn’t let me down too bad.
  • Had our regions director of church planting, Chuck Frank, in attendance as well.  Heard a few people “lovingly confronted” him about stealing me away.
  • For such a heavy topic, I thought we did good of sharing God’s Word these past few weeks in a way that was uplifting instead of depressing.
  • Can’t wait for next week…EASTER!
  • So who are you inviting?
  • Pray this week that God will open up the hearts of those you’ll be inviting, that He will open up doors for you to invite and that you will have the courage to open your mouth to make the invite at the appropriate time.
  • Invite like crazy this week…let’s pack the place out and see many have their eternal destinies changed!

Questions Answered Part 2

March 2, 2010 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

Today I’m continuing to answer questions after my big announcement this past Sunday.  Today we’ll look at two questions.  One has to do with my plant and the other the future of United.

3.  Can I just come up to Harrisburg each week to your new church? The simplest answer is, “Well it’s a free country we can’t stop you from doing that but…” and here’s where I want to give you some things to consider.  First,  traveling that distance each week will quickly get old.  Second, you know that I’m big on you inviting people to come with you each week.  Do you really think your unsaved neighbors, friends, co-workers and relatives are really going to want to drive an hour each week to get to church?  No, so that’s why you being plugged into a local church is so important.  Also, it’s hard to serve at a church when you live so far away.  So for everybody’s sake it’s better if you remain at United/CFCOG and help the next guy take things to the next level.

Now with that being said, there will be opportunities for you to come up and serve in some short-term missions types of projects.  Some of these will be during the week, others will be on the weekend.  I guess what I’m saying is I’d love to see you help once, at the most twice, per year if you feel led to, but again for everyone’s sake….especially yours, it’s best for you to stay plugged in to the exciting things that are happening right here in Chambersburg.

Now I know for some of you this was not the answer you wanted to hear.  So here is your option.  Pray about actually moving to Harrisburg with us.  Earl, the Elders and myself all feel that if someone is serious enough to make the move then none of us should stop it because it will need to be a God thing working in your life.  What I mean by that is unless you really are a glutton for punishment then no one in their right mind would want to move, find new jobs, choose new schools, make new friends, etc, unless God was calling them to be a part of supporting me and the vision that God has given me to fulfill.  If your seriously interested, I’d love to talk (gilbert@exponentialchurch.tv), but please make sure you’re motivation is to follow God not just follow Gilbert.

4.  Who will be taking your place at United? Again the honest answer is I don’t know.  Today an ad will be placed with the largest church staffing organization in the USA.  Also, I and others have plenty of friends nationally that are a part of relevant ministries and so we are contacting them so they can think through their network of contacts for a possible right fit.  Also we’ll be getting the word out through our denominational publications.  I love what Galen said on Sunday, “Obviously if God is leading Gilbert to Harrisburg, it means He is leading someone else here”.  I do truly believe that and what you can be doing is praying for the hiring team to make the right choice.  That team is made up of people from all demographics of the church but primarily people who call United home.  They will do their best to find someone to take United to levels I never even dreamed of.  Also be praying for whoever that is that their heart would be open to God’s leading as they read an ad or hear about the opportunity.

Ideally within the next few weeks the team will have enough resumes that they can begin narrowing the stack down and actually begin the interviews.  Again ideally we’d like to see someone in place during May so that there can be a brief overlap between their starting and my leaving.  However, I know the hiring team and Council will not rush the process and just bring someone in for the sake of having someone on staff.  Earl and the Elders are committed to having United be carried on as well if not even better than it currently is so if that takes longer, then it takes longer.  In the short-term they may cause some temporary discomfort but in the long-term it will be very beneficial.  If you have any questions about any of this, I know Earl would love to hear from you.  earl@mycfcog.org

This Sunday

April 9, 2009 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

Hey thanks for RSVP’ing for the Experience this Sunday.  We had our run through last night and it is going to be incredible!  I have a few favors to ask of you…

  1. Please continue inviting like never before…even that person that’s turned you down a million times.
  2. Please pray for the team, myself and all those who will be attending.
  3. Please BE IN YOUR SEATS at least 5 minutes before the Experience starts.  The beginning is going to be incredible…you won’t want to miss it and quite frankly it will be hard to find a seat during it and would be distracting to others.
  4. Once you find your seat if you can sit in the middle of a row that would be great.  I expect it’s going to be a madhouse and the easier it is for our ushers to find aisle seats for our guests, the better and smoother things will be on Sunday.
  5. Did I mention yet to invite someone?  I’ve been hearing of people using Facebook to invite, text messaging, e-mail and yes even the good old fashioned face-to-face.  I will be giving a clear message on the whether the resurrection was an Urban Legend or a true historical event.  If it was a true historical event then the implications are huge.  Do your part this week to make sure that by Sunday afternoon hell will be a little less crowded in the future!

Thanks…love you all and hope you have a great week…I’ll see you and your guests on Sunday!

Tag Team Effort

March 17, 2009 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

I grew up in the midst of the WWF’s (now WWE) heyday.  Guys like Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, the Iron Shiek and Rowdy Roddy Piper were bigger than life both literally and figuratively.  But it was the tag-team events that I truly loved…the British Bulldogs were my favorites.

The reason I bring this up is the way we do United is much the same…the tag-team part that is, not all the other stuff.  I mean it’s pretty obvious that the words steroids and Gilbert Thurston have never been used in the same sentence until now.

You see when you walk through the doors you are in essence tagging me, the worship team and our creative team saying…”You do your part to make sure me and my friends have an Experience with God today”.  And then when you leave we tag you saying, “Go out into the community and be bold enough to invite someone to come back with you again next week”.

We have an amazing partnership in this way and I just want to encourage you to do your part.  This weekend’s message about alcohol is an easy one to invite people to…and as you saw last weekend, we’ll do our part to create an Experience that people will never forgot, but more importantly will be life-changing.

We’re working hard right now to make sure Sunday is memorable…are you doing your part?
