- Weird day…
- For the first time since we launched, I wasn’t speaking so my energy level was a lot lower.
- Also, for the first time it rained on a Sunday so putting out signs this morning was not a lot of fun.
- Just for fun I downloaded a pedometer app for my phone to see how much I walk on a Sunday morning.
- The answer for today was 0.9 miles.
- A lot of that is on the stairs…see church planting is good for your physical health.
- Mental health…mmm not so much.
- I also took the extra time today to shoot a bunch of pictures and video so hopefully I can put together some promo videos soon.
- It’s amazing how much you can shoot and most of it’s not good at all…blurry, bad lighting, bad facial expression, etc.
- Got some good stuff though that hopefully I can use.
- I also used the opportunity to serve in and observe some areas that I normally don’t get to.
- Spent a lot of time out in the parking lot being a greeter.
- They liked me out there because they said the weather was better when I was there.
- I also got to spend time in our ECTV Kids Theater and observe Chelsea and her crew leading the kids.
- Awesome! The kids environment is a lot of fun and the kids where really into it.
- Also, got to sit in for some of Chad’s message…let me just say those theater seats are incredible…how do people stay awake during my messages?
- Chad did a great job talking about how to handle unrealistic expectations many have during the holidays.
- So great to have him and the entire Chute family be a part of ExponentialChurch.tv.
- I got a sneak peek at his message earlier this week and he said, “Oh don’t worry when I bust the picture frame with the hammer, it will only create a crack in the glass”.
- Uh…no it shattered! Great sound though and very dramatic. Sounds good on the recording as well!
- It was nice to have a break, but I can’t wait for next week’s message on how to deal with family pressures and tension.
- Since my week was different this past week, part of my time was spent re-doing the web-site.
- It still was more geared towards the launch and I wanted to start getting it switched over.
- Still need to add a section that talks about our ministries and I want to have a section that highlights stories of life-change, but I didn’t have time for all that this week.
- Also, some sections still need more content, but you’ll get the basic gist.
- In any case, check out the changes, let me know if you see any mistakes, or broken links, and make suggestions of how we can serve you and others better through the site.
- Have a great week!
Inside Today’s Experience
- Amazing that today ended up going as smoothly as it did.
- Yesterday our computer which runs lights and had everything lighting wise saved on it crashed.
- So this morning we had to start from scratch.
- Unfortunately the first computer Andy brought in didn’t work either.
- So he ran home and got another.
- May not sound like a big deal but it is. Each light then needs to be assigned to communicate with the computer through what’s called a DMX universe. Once that happens then each lighting scene needs to be written.
- Good thing my message today was on how to handle stress. :)
- With all that said, by the time the Experience started, it was hard to tell that things were any different than normal. Wasn’t elaborate but it did the trick.
- Wow it was cold this morning as Mike and I put the signs out but I’m finding the exercise both warms and wakes me up.
- I already told you our lighting dilemma…the other thing we had going against us was the amount of people away because of sickness.
- However, we have an awesome team and they still got everything set-up on time.
- You might be asking what the picture for this post is all about?
- As we began the “I Hate the Holidays” series, Bill and the band put on the most hideous looking Christmas sweaters and sweatshirts you can imagine and sang accapella “Deck the Halls”. I then interrupted and we went right into the bumper video for this series of me putting a beat down on a Christmas tree.
- If you want to hear how it all went down, you can listen to it and the message here.
- For the video click here.
- I filmed that a few years back…it was fun although I got hurt during the dive part and afterward we found out the Christmas tree we thought was a spare was actually something our Children’s Pastor needed the same night we filmed this. Needless to say a quick trip was made to Wal-Mart for a replacement. :)
- Saw quite a few tears at the end of the message…either it was that bad or people really were giving up their “Bethlehem” to God.
- Confused by that last statement…you’ll just have to listen to the message.
- We had 4 more people make professions of faith in Jesus…that never gets old!
- One nice thing about being within an hour and 40 minutes of two of the previous churches I pastored at is you never know who might show up. Today a couple from my first church, that I haven’t seen for awhile, showed up for a visit since they needed to be in the area. Cool to see them.
- Love getting to meet with people afterward and hear how excited they are about what we’re doing.
- One woman shared with me, “I gave up on organized religion years ago but someone kept inviting to check you out. I loved it and I’ll be back”.
- That’s what we mean when we say we’re a “church for people who don’t like church”.
- Whether it be people who are unchurched or dechurched we want to provide an Experience for them with God that is relevant to their lives but most of all life-changing.
- Her story also illustrates why it’s so important to keep inviting and inviting and inviting.
- So who will you invite this week?
- Remember people are more open to invites at Christmas time than any other time of the year.
- We’re doing our part to help with name recognition…here’s the 4 radio ads we began running this week.
- Next week, Chad will be preaching for the first time and will talk about how many times we have unrealistic or unfulfilled expectations during the holidays that cause us to hate them.
- Later this afternoon I’m meeting with a great friend, Fred Kress who is the National Director for Evangelism Explosion. It was through 2 guys using the EE presentation of the Gospel that I became a follower of Jesus back in 1993.
- Fred and I met in 1997 after I became a certified trainer and have tried to keep up with each other whenever we can.
- It’s been a few years so I’m looking forward to catching up face-to-face.
- Have a great week…don’t forget to show restraint, be thankful and reflect this holiday season so you can reduce stress.
4 Radio Ads We’re Running
We’ve done all kinds of advertising for ExponentialChurch.tv but today starts our first radio spots. Big thanks to my good friend, Vince Antonucci, for the inspiration behind these. You can check out our ads here.
They will be running on 99.3 KISS FM which is Harrisburg’s biggest and best pop station. Big thanks to Mike and Glenn from the station for your help as well.
Mind Your Own Business Bonus Questions
Yesterday we wrapped up the Mind Your Own Business series where we looked at God’s plan for your finances. Many of you have reported how impactful this series has already been and I look forward to more stories in the coming months. Please email me as God blesses you so we can know what’s happening. The purpose of this post though is to answer some questions that this series has sparked in some of you. Most of them have to do with week 3’s message about tithes and giving. So let’s get right to it…
- Should I tithe on the net or gross of my paycheck? A friend of mine once joked, “Well which one do you want God to bless you on?” In all seriousness, God wants His part first. In other words, before Uncle Sam gets his cut, God wants the 10% that belongs to Him. So the answer is you tithe on the gross.
- “Gilbert you said to tithe weekly but I only get paid monthly. What should I do?” Great question and I misspoke when I said Lisa and I have never missed a week of tithing. What I should have said was we’ve never missed a paycheck. So you should tithe anytime you get paid whether that’s weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.
- Should I tithe on every source of income or just on my paycheck? The answer is everything. Again the premise behind this series was that you are to be a manager of all the stuff God has entrusted to you. That includes more than just money you get from your job. So if you get a bonus, inheritance, cash gift, etc, you should tithe on that as well because it’s all a part of the resources God is entrusting to you.
- “I’m self-employed and don’t really take a paycheck. How much should I tithe”? That’s a tricky one that I dealt with when I was self-employed as well. My first suggestion would be to start paying yourself a paycheck. This will help in not only the tithe portion but also in applying all the other principles we looked at in the series for getting out of debt, staying out of debt and saving for the future. However, sometimes that can’t work so you need to just be as honest with God as possible about what is truly 10% of your income. Remember the tithe is more about where your heart is at than it is about money. There are a lot of legitimate, legal things you can do as a self-employed person to lower your tax burden and show very little income. However, just like the gross or net question above, God wants His portion before you factor in taxes. Let me try to give an example. Let’s say you have a product that you sell for $1000 and it costs you $600. When you sell it, you don’t tithe on $1000, but instead the $400 profit you made. Again the mistake many make is that when you add in business expenses, it’s possible to show on your taxes that you only made $200 profit. Now this example was very simplistic and I’m already seeing exceptions in it myself but again you’ve just got to be honest with God and come up with a true number not one your fudging.
- “I have been giving to charities. Should I stop giving to them in order to tithe to the church?” Well that depends on your financial situation. However if you can only do one, then God says first you tithe. Anything beyond the tithe is called an offering and can be given in any way that you want….charities, another ministry, your churches building fund or mission fund, etc. My prayer is that all of us will apply the principles from this series so we can give both tithes and offerings.
- “Gilbert you said that when people tithe God promises to bless you. Is that just financially or in other ways as well?” Again this was an area that I should have clarified in the message. In fact, I had it in my notes but forgot to say it. God does promise to bless but it’s not strictly you give $1 and He’ll give you $5 back. Many of the greatest blessings you can’t put a price tag on. Many blessings are also things we may not even sense or appreciate in the moment. Now that’s not to say God can’t or won’t bless you financially, but it goes far beyond just money.
- “I’m in debt up to my eyeballs and can just barely afford to pay my bills each month. Should I tithe?” This is another tricky question because by saying yes it would appear that I’m condoning you getting into further debt or getting behind on your bills. However, this is where faith comes in. Do you really believe that God is who He says He is?Do you really believe God when He says you can trust Him with the tithe and that if you do He will open up the floodgates of Heaven and pour out so much blessing on you that you will not have enough room to contain it? You see why I kept saying throughout the series that how you handle money says more about your faith in God and who or what you really trust in than anything else? So if you really believe and trust in God then yes go ahead and tithe. Remember as I said in the week 3 message, “90% of your income with God’s blessing is greater than 100% of it with God’s curse on it”.
Hope these additional answers we’re beneficial. Let me know what other questions you might have. Be blessed and trust in the Almighty God more than you do the almighty dollar!
Inside Today’s Experience
- Probably our worst day yet since we launched but always a good day when people come into a relationship with Jesus.
- 2 more today!
- Attendance was down with the holiday, we had more technical issues today than we probably have had all the other week’s combined and because of the holiday movie schedule, we had to rush to get out even though we have the theaters rented for far longer than they gave us today.
- I didn’t sleep well last night…so I think I appreciated the the extra half-hour I gave for the team to arrive more so than anyone else.
- We’re doing a great job of getting set-up…really got a system going now.
- Great to see some of my Chambersburg peeps make the trip up today to be a part of the Experience.
- Also had the Smith family in from the Boston area today…Mike is the pastor of LifeQuest Church and is a great friend.
- Today was the last message in the Mind Your Own Business series and since I was talking about saving and investing, we decided to start with the song Billionaire. The problem is last week the guy who was supposed to do the rap part while he was home on Thanksgiving break fell through…
- So the rapping fell to…Me.
- I listened to the song about a billion times this week.
- Here’s a video in case you missed it or just want to laugh at me again.
- I don’t get nervous before speaking but I was before doing this.
- It was fun but I’m glad it’s done.
- Bill did an awesome job on his part considering it’s above his comfortable range.
- Because I knew the message was going to be longer today, we only had time for 2 participation songs but the crowd seemed to be into it and the band did a great job.
- I don’t know if it was because rapping sapped my energy or just because I was tired, but I never really found my rhythm preaching today.
- It could also be as I said during the message that it seemed more like a financial seminar than a sermon.
- Still good stuff though that has changed my life for 15+ years so I hope and pray that everyone will take all the principles of the series and apply them.
- With all that said, I’d still recommend you listen to the message from today…lots of practical financial tips.
- I love getting to meet people afterward and hear the stories…awesome.
- Next week we begin the “I Hate the Holidays” series by looking at the first thing that makes people hate them…STRESS.
- Make sure you invite someone to come out and be a part…have a great week and don’t forget to Mind Your Own Business.
