Wednesday Thoughts and Ramblings

April 30, 2008 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • Thanks to everyone for your prayers for the break-out I did yesterday at the denominational conference.  It was well received and I enjoyed speaking the rest of the day with various pastors about ideas.
  • It’s still weird being recognized from my days at Purpose Driven.  I had a number of people come up and tell me how much they had enjoyed hearing me speak at various conferences I did previously.
  • From a prideful standpoint it makes you feel special…sort of like a rock star.  I remember once Lisa and I were travelling and we were sitting in a restaurant eating when someone came up and said, “Aren’t you Gilbert Thurston from Purpose Driven?”
  • Now that’s cool every once in awhile, but I have at least a little bit of empathy for movie stars, athletes, etc., who can’t go out in public in peace or eat a meal without constantly being barraged by people.
  • Makes you realize why the scriptures say that Jesus withdrew many times to get his batteries recharged.
  • As for the rest of the conference, it had it’s high’s and lows.
  • The lows are the business meeting parts…glad I only had to be there for 1 day instead of all 3.  While the world is dying and going to hell, pastors of all people argue over the stupidest things including the proper way to conduct Robert’s Rules of Order.
  • Not exactly sure who that Robert guy is but sometimes I wish he had been shot.
  • The highs included spending time brainstorming with some pastors, hanging out with some friends and making some new ones.
  • A couple of funny things happened as well.
    • Earl got the church van stuck in the mud…which led to many of the pastors making jokes at Earl’s expense.
    • Gene and I were determined to get cell phone coverage so we climbed pretty high up the mountain to find the perfect spot and then once you did get a signal you had to stand perfectly still.  Ironically the world was still surviving without us.
    • At lunch one of our senior adults from CFCOG (there as a delegate) was sitting next to me.  He’s a great guy, but apparently he’s a little confused about what United is all about.  Someone else at the table asked me about United and I told them we had maxed out the space in the new gym.  Our older member says to me, “Well maybe you should have them come over to the church service then.”  I thought he was joking and making a playful jab at our unique way of doing church.  But then he says, “I hear that some adults are actually attending over there.  You’d have more room if you sent them over to the sanctuary.”  It took everything I had from puking my drink about my nose I wanted to laugh so hard.  I guess that’s just further proof that as church leaders there is no such thing as over communicating.
    • Before dinner, Earl was asked to come forward to pray for the meal as well as the evening service where people were going to be getting their pastoral license and others were being ordained.  When he prayed for those getting their license he made up a word to describe them…it was something like…licensionists…I later ran into Kim who wasn’t there for that part and I said, “You’ll never believe what Earl did”…she said, “I’ve already heard.”
    • At the service Gene got his license and right as it’s about to happen I realize that I should snap a picture on my cell phone.  So I frantically, power it up (had it turned off like a good boy), get the camera mode going and then hand it to Kim because I couldn’t actually see him because the “camera man” was blocking my view.  I give it to her just in time…she snaps the picture and…the memory card was full.
    • And why was the card full you might ask?  Because I had wasted so many pictures earlier in the day trying to get a clear shot of Earl singing in an impromptu choir that he decided to join.  Problem was he was hiding.
  • Another highlight was the keynote address from Rick Rusaw the Senior Pastor of LifeBridge Christian Church in Colorado.  He gave a very inspirational talk and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house by the time he was done.
  • Today is catch up from missing yesterday and tonight is our normal Wedneday night classes…why don’t you come out and check one out.

Other Weekend Thoughts

April 28, 2008 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • Wow this weekend wiped me out pretty good…I slept until 9 this morning.
  • As I got the day started my e-mail box was full with parents thanking me for yesterday’s message.  I didn’t really think about it going into the message, but it has provided an awesome opportunity for parents and thier kids to communicate about sex.
  • I forgot to mention in last night’s blog (sort of distracted with all the CAYA people around) that 5 more people gave their lives to Jesus yesterday!
  • One thing I forgot to mention in the message when talking to the married couples….when you set extreme standards in your life it is a good witness to others that you take your faith seriously…it’s a great sign to your spouse of your commitment and love…and it’s a great tool when talking with your kids about setting margin in their own sexuality.  In other words, “Here’s the standards, Mom and Dad have set for their lives…”
  • I forgot to mention in the blog when I was talking about all the guys that said they wished they had stood up to cheer…one guy said it would have been hilarious if it was the “slow clap“.
  • ***NEWS ALERT***    Attending United will help you graduate from college.
  • One of our college students shared with Lisa that she had to take a final last week where the essay question was “In today’s society people are chasing after materialistic things instead of making time for relationships with family and friends.  Do you agree or disagree?”  Yeah I’d say the Take it to the Limit series may have helped with that one, don’t you think?
  • Friday night was the coffeehouse and although the attendance was about half of normal we still had a great time.
  • Tomorrow I’ll be speaking at one of the breakout sessions for the denominations annual conference.  Obviously I’m a little (OK, a lot) different than most of the pastors in the denomination so pray that God would give me the right words to say that will be challenging but yet not offensive.

Inside Today’s Experience

April 27, 2008 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • Wow what a weekend…I’m just now getting home.
  • Saturday night Shalom Christian Academy had their version of the prom and I ran all the tech stuff for them so it threw me off my normal Saturday schedule.  I never got home until after 11PM.
  • Not a good thing because I was already nervous enough about today’s message.
  • So I got up at 7 this morning to put some last minute touches on the message.
  • I’m not sure I’ve ever been more nervous for a message.
  • It was a lot of personal stuff to share and the fact that my in-laws and parents usually listen on-line doesn’t make it any easier.
  • Anyway the morning started out with easy set-up other than the fact that it was stinking hot and that we noticed a pool of water had pooled outside of the Youth Room door entrance…so I got a mop and played the role janitor.
  • I had warned the team that we needed to cut one of the songs because the message was going to be a long one.
  • I thought they did a great job with the 2 new songs.
  • As I expected some parents did elect to take there kids out once they found out what the message was going to be about.
  • The parents that did let their kids stay told me they were glad they did.
  • I had quite a few guys tell me that when I mentioned the 48-72 hour rule they felt bad they didn’t have enough guts to stand up and cheer.
  • “Ah just go hug a tree.”   Yet another saying that will end up on a t-shirt.
  • Overall everyone I talked to seemed to get a lot out of the message and many people shared it was timely in their lives or in the lives of others that were with them.
  • Afterwards our team had to tear down all of our equipment so they could play in the sanctuary for the missions event.
  • Wow that’s a lot of work…nothing a little pizza couldn’t help with though.
  • The team did well considering that we basically have to get set-up without much of a sound check.
  • Not sure how much the people attending enjoyed it…
  • Andy and I ran the tech side of things and it was a nightmare.
  • At one point one of the presenters was introducing churches and having the people stand.  At the end he asked if their were any others present.  Both Andy and I stood up…it’s a joke because our favorite show is LOST and some of the characters are called the Others.
  • By the time we got all cleaned up, it was time for CAYA…
  • Now everyone from CAYA is at our house and getting ready to play a game.  Others are playing pool and some are playing Wii.
  • They’re eating all of our food, so I’m getting ready to head out to Food Lion…

Softball + Fog= Uh ooo

April 26, 2008 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

Not sure why I found this so funny, but as I came into the office this morning a softball game was about to begin…or at least it was supposed to.  Pretty hard to play when you can’t see.
