Broken Windows

November 18, 2008 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

Some of you might wonder why I’m so obsessed with excellence even when it comes to the small details.  Well a couple of days ago my friend Mark Batterson wrote something that explained it better than I can.  Here is an excerpt from what he wrote…

In the March 1982 issue of Atlantic Monthly, James Wilson and George Kelling wrote a piece titled Broken Windows. They argued that something as insignificant and innocuous as a broken window sends a subliminal message. If the window is left unrepaired it communicates that crime is ok. So Wilson and Kelling argued that the way to fight serious crime is by cracking down on small infractions.

That is precisely what happened in New York City when Rudolph Giuliani was elected mayor in 1994. He cracked down on squeegee pests; arrested fare jumpers; and cleaned up the graffiti on subway cars. Critics said it was a waste of time and a waste of money. Statistics would suggest otherwise. The murder rate was more than cut in half.

In his book, Broken Windows Broken Business, Michael Levine applies the broken window theory to business.

A broken window can be a sloppy counter, a poorly located sale item, a randomly organized menu, or an employee with a bad attitude. It can be physical, like a faded paint job, or symbolic, like a policy that requires customers to pay for customer service. When the waiter at a Chinese restaurant is named Billy Bob, that’s a broken window.

So then how does that apply to us.  Well every misspelled word on a slide, every missed transition between elements, every guest ungreeted, every misplayed note or misspoken word, says something.  Now is the world going to come to an end because of any of these things?  No.  Will most “church people” overlook these types of things?  Yes.  But what does the person coming in for the first-time think?  For many it just reinforces the idea they already have in their head that church is something not to be taken seriously.

I guess what I’m saying is we need to strive to be excellent in everything we do…even in the small things.  Now many of you reading this can’t do anything about some of the things I mentioned above, but here are some things you can do.  If you see a piece of trash on the floor, stop and pick it up…yes it is your job.  If you’re in the bathroom and the counters have water all over them, take a paper towel or two and wipe up the area.  If you see someone that looks like they’re lost in the building, go help them.  If during the summer you notice the grass is getting long, volunteer to be on the mowing crew.

I’ll wrap-up by reminding you that this is one of our core values…Excellence Honors God and Inspires People.  Excellence doesn’t mean perfection, but it does mean doing the very best that you possibly can.

Other Weekend Thoughts

November 17, 2008 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • The Contagious Christmas Challenge is becoming…well contagious!
  • Already hearing of other churches that are up to the Challenge.
  • In fact, I got an e-mail earlier from Kevin Richardson (Executive Director of the Eastern Region of our denomination) who happened to be in attendance yesterday and he is requesting all the info so they can promote it to all of our churches.
  • So far between the United site and YouTube, the vision video has been seen over 100 times.
  • Found out another church sent their entire worship team to visit us this past weekend to get some ideas and to be refreshed.
  • Too bad it was an off day, but I’m hoping God takes what we offered and uses it to inspire them so they do even greater things than we’ve done.
  • Had breakfast with a pastor friend on Friday morning and he passed along a story I though was sort of funny.
    • He said he was standing in line to vote on election day and he overheard a converstation between two people discussing United.  One person apparently attends the services in the sanctuary and was saying, “Yeah our church has gone all Hollywood with the smoke and the lights”.
    • To which another person in line interuppted and said, “Excuse me, but I hear your church is really growing and reaching a lot of new people for Christ”.  To which our member or attender responded, “You’re right and that’s a good thing”.
    • Couple of observations:
      • I’m glad our member/attender, was able to see past their personal preferences to the life-change that is happening.
      • How cool is it that people in the community are talking about us and that a complete stranger defended what God is doing in our midst.
      • Be careful what you say, you never know who is listening.
  • I found out that someone called into the Word-FM this past Thursday to have them pray for Earl and myself…thanks whoever you were…I know I need all the prayer I can get.
  • Forgot to mention in yesterday’s blog that I almost tripped at the 9:15.
  • We put down a bunch of carpets to help keep the stage from reflecting so much light and I got my foot caught under one and almost took a tumble.
  • I think the problem is, I do enough weird stuff from the stage that people might have thought it was all part of the plan and I may have laid there for awhile knocked out until someone realized something was wrong.  :)
  • Ok, back to work…I’m flying down to Texas this Wednesday through Friday so I’ve got a lot to get done before I go.
  • Oh and by the way…Lisa leaves on Friday for Florida…so I will be accepting any and all food donations…ok maybe not all but you get my point.

    Inside Today’s Experiences

November 16, 2008 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

    • I have mixed feelings about today.
    • From a positive standpoint, we tied for our highest attendance ever, including a new record at 9:15 and many people are excited about the Contagious Christmas Challenge that I outlined
    • On the other end, we had our worst day since we moved into the building from an execution standpoint.
    • It actually started earlier in the week as things kept getting further and further behind in getting things ready for the weekend.
    • In fact I ended up working both all day Friday and Saturday trying to wrap-up loose ends.
    • It didn’t help that Aaron was fighting a bad cold all week.
    • This morning then things got off to a late start for the team doing their run-through which pushed everything behind to the point that guests were already coming in and they were still practicing.
    • Then we couldn’t get my mic to work until about 5 minutes before the 9:15 started.
    • To add on, our computer operator forgot to tell us he couldn’t make it this morning and so Lisa was having to run it even though she had no clue what to do.
    • I frantically was running all through the building try to find one of our normal operators and of course couldn’t find one.
    • To say I was a bit frazzled by the time I hit the stage would be a great understatement.
    • I hate not going on the stage with a clear mind…and it showed… the first message and for that matter the entire first Experience was terrible.
    • The second one went much better but there were still glitches that drive me crazy…it’s been awhile since we’ve had anything remotely like today and I’m glad they occur few and far between.
    • To cap things off, I felt much better about the 10:45 message but when I got home to post it, something had happened so it never recorded.
    • Oh well in the old days that meant going in tomorrow and re-recording…now with 2 Experiences, I’m able to post the other one…even if it was terrible.
    • It was great to have some family members in attendance today as well as our Executive Director for the denomination, Kevin Richardson.  That was his first time with us and man was I embarrased that he was with us on this day of all days.
    • He said he enjoyed it though…which either means he was lying (doubtful) or the standards of what he normally sees are not that high.
    • Despite all this, I am still excited about the Contagious Christmas Challenge.  Please don’t forget to bring in your money over the next 3 weeks and nominate families that may be in need if you know of any.
    • Here are the links to the videos so you can share with your family and friends what we’re doing.  On United.  On Youtube.
    • Ok, time for a nap…and then tonight is the Redskins against the team I won’t even bother mentioning…either a bad day will instantly get better or you’d better hide all sharp objects from me.  ;-)

    Friday Thoughts

November 14, 2008 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

    • Hasn’t really been much of a day off.
    • We’re having problems with some stuff that is needed for the weekend so I’ve been at the church most of the day.
    • Plus Aaron is sick and is supposed to lead worship for us…please pray.
    • Had an interesting breakfast meeting this morning with a pastor who really could use your prayers right now for guidance and direction for both himself personally and the church he leads.
    • I ate at Red Robin twice yesterday…mmm good.
    • I’ll finally be getting a haircut later this afternoon…I’m like 2 weeks behind…I hate when my hair gets long…ick.
    • Had dinner last night with Adam and Andrea from our worship team…Andrea said, “Yeah Hannah and I were talking about on Sunday about how you needed to get your haircut.”
    • Nice to know that I inspire such fascinating conversation.  :)
    • Altough we’re way behind on getting things ready for this weekend, I’m really excited about it…can’t wait to share with you what the Contagious Christmas Challenge is all about!
    • Big thanks to Ashleigh Schwindt…the way better half of Aaron’s… for taking and then posting some new photo’s of the Experience.  Check them out in the Image Galleries to your left.
    • Have a great weekend…see you Sunday!

    Random Thoughts on a Wednesday

November 12, 2008 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

    • Sorry it’s been a few days since I checked in.
    • Had a wedding this past weekend which it’s always fun to be a part of someone’s big day, but it’s also the most nerve-wracking thing because you don’t want to mess up anyone’s big day either.
    • I still can’t get over the energy this past weekend…what a privilege it is for me to be your pastor!
    • Sunday night we spent some time with friends and their little girl wanted us to all watch Kung-Fu Panda.
    • The movie was alright, but the preview for the kids movie Monsters vs. Aliens looked really cool.  Comes out in March of 2009.
    • Monday I got a lot of stuff done for the remainder of this series then had a council meeting in the evening.
    • I love statistics and so I check out how much and where our web traffic comes from at least once or twice per week.
    • Monday I noticed hits coming in from Italy…hmmm…who do we know that is in Italy right now…oh yeah that would be Earl.
    • Even on vacation he can’t help but to keep up with what’s happening here at the church.
    • Seriously Earl if you’re reading this…enjoy your vacation…take a few days away from technology.
    • This being said from the guy who still blogs while on vacation.   :)
    • Yesterday was filled with meetings and then late afternoon and into early evening we shot some video for the big challenge I’ll be making this weekend as a part of our OUTBREAK series.
    • We shot about 9 different sections of which I think the fewest takes I did any of them in was 4, with a high of something like 13.
    • AHHHHH…I hate when that happens.
    • When I got home one of the first things I said to Lisa was, “I’m going to go wash my make-up off”.
    • I later aksed her if when she was a little girl she ever dreamed that one day her future husband would utter the above line.
    • Today I’m going to nail down the details for the Christmas series, attend Wednesday night classes, and then I have a 2009 strategy meeting for tech purchases.
