Random Thoughts

January 22, 2014 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

On this “Whatever Wednesday” I thought I’d once again just give some random thoughts that are going through my mind.

  • I hurt my knee at some point in the last few days but I’m not sure how…can barely bend it.
  • Getting old sucks.
  • On a positive note, it’s a good reason not to go out and shovel snow!
  • My heater for my Koi Pond burnt out so I’ve been having to go out and chip ice ever few hours until the new one arrives.
  • I have 2 key meetings today regarding ECTV.
  • One is about a potential new location for us and the other is about some strategy stuff.  Please pray both go well.
  • Can’t believe how much interest yesterday’s post about the Richard Sherman controversy got.
  • Just to be clear…the point of the post wasn’t to condone his behavior…the point was how quickly American’s reacted to his reaction and how we must be careful of that or we end up becoming guilty of the same kind of rants he displayed.
  • Lisa made fudge yesterday for the snow day….mmmm good!
  • I spent a good chunk of yesterday preparing the 2013 giving statements that we are required to give to anyone who financially supported us last year.
  • So thankful for the hundreds of people who gave so our little church plant can try to make a difference here in Harrisburg and beyond.
  • Especially thankful for those who don’t even attend our church but so believe in our mission of “Helping people taking life-changing next steps in their journey towards God” that they give to support us.
  • Here is a link if you’d like to join them in partnering with us.
  • Yesterday I ordered 3 books for the price of two.   They are “The Creative Habit”, The Willpower Instinct” and “The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs”.
  • Almost all books anymore I do on Audible.
  • Ok, just had to take a break to go out and shovel snow…Lisa decided to head into work so  I needed to clear her a path and uncover her car.
  • Not sure what is up with my knee but it hurts something fierce.
  • And with that…my mind isn’t thinking of anything else…so I’m out.

Topical Tuesday: Richard Sherman Controversy

January 21, 2014 by Gilbert 1 Comment

How sad is it that the most topical thing in our country right now is the post-game rant of an NFL player.  In case you missed it, on Sunday night, the Seahawks and 49ers played one another with the winner advancing to the Super Bowl.  These two teams had already played one another twice during the regular season and simply don’t like one another.  It was a well played, hard hitting game and at the end the 49ers had the ball with a chance to score and win.  However, quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s pass with 22 seconds left intended for his star wide receiver Michael Crabtree was deflected by the Seahawk’s star cornerback, Richard Sherman and ultimately intercepted by the Seahawks to seal their victory.

Immediately after the game, FOX reporter Erin Andrews interviewed Sherman and this happened…

The reaction was immediate as Twitter and Facebook blew up calling Sherman a thug, classless and many other things that simply can’t be repeated nor, should they ever be said. Now before going any further, let me be clear that I am not a Seahawks fan and quite frankly have never really cared for Sherman as a football player.  However, I think that Americans have gotten this one wrong.  Sherman, in the heat of the moment, spoke out with passion that he feels he’s the best and that the 49ers were wrong trying to target him on the biggest play of the game.  Many fans berated him for his rant as they then immediately went on a rant of their own telling the world how bad this person is.

Now to be clear, Sherman is a trash-talker, it’s a part of his game.  This interview I feel was just an extended part of it while the adrenaline was still running high.  Just a few minutes later watch how composed he is as the excitement of the moment has worn off…

From what I’ve read this is a very intelligent young man.  He graduated second in his high school class and then graduated on time from Stanford with a degree in communications.  I don’t necessarily agree with everything he does on the field both physically and verbally, but I do feel that the reaction most American’s have had to this just goes to show one of the problems we have as a country.  We react to every little thing like it’s the biggest thing.  We’re quick to make judgments in the moment instead of thinking through things.  Now I’m sure humans have always been like this but with the advent of social media, we instantly share stuff without really filtering it through a proper thought process.  Again the irony of this situation was that people were ranting about someone else’s rant.

For those that call yourselves followers of Jesus who engaged in this type of behavior, let me challenge you with a parting thought from scripture…

Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. -James 1:19-20

Take note of the “slow to speak” part.  In today’s culture we could include, “slow to tweet”, “slow to re-tweet”, “slow to post as a status up-date” or “slow to share on your wall”.  Think before you react!  When you don’t not only is it a bad reflection on you but on Jesus as well.  Even if you’re not a follower of Jesus, being quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry are still pretty good words to live by.

So there it is…my thoughts on the Richard Sherman controversy.  What do you think about all this?  His rant?  America’s rant?  My thoughts?

Oh and my prediction for the Super Bowl:   Bronco’s 27      Seahawks   17

You Can Have Financial Freedom!

January 20, 2014 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

Next to beginning a relationship with Jesus and marrying Lisa, putting together a financial plan and sticking to it has probably been the 3rd greatest decision I have ever made in my life.  Lisa and I started it 19 years ago and fully implemented it about 17 years ago.  Today it has allowed us a ton of financial freedom that we could have only dreamed about.  Yesterday at ExponentialChurch.tv I talked about it, but only gave the beliefs behind the plan, and not the plan itself.  My point was this…”What you believe determines how you behave”.  Until you change how you think about money, you will probably not handle it in a proper way.  You can listen to yesterday’s message here.  Part 2 of it comes this Sunday.

However, at multiple points in the message I mentioned that I had also taught the plan in the past, so I thought I’d make it convenient to find all the proper links for it here. The “Mind Your Own Business” series was done in 2010 and then in 2013, I repackaged it with some up-dates as  the “Strapped” series.  I pray that this helps you in your journey!  Please let me know what questions you may have or how I can help you.

Random Thoughts I’m Having Today

January 15, 2014 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

This is a “Whatever Wednesday” so I thought I’d just get some random thoughts out that are rattling through my mind….

  • Had a good time away Monday and Tuesday with some other pastors dreaming about what a collaborative church plant might look like.
  • My role is to do some demographics research.  This is actually something I really enjoy doing so it should be quite easy.
  • We went on Monday night and played Laser Tag together.  It was a ton of fun but we were all drenched with sweat by the time we were done 4 games.
  • It was only afterward that we noticed the sign, “No Running”.
  • See just goes to show you even pastors need grace in following the rules.  :)
  • I was the high scorer of the night!!!
  • See just goes to show you even pastors battle with pride.
  • On a more serious note I was thankful for hour long conversations that I had with both George Spangler and Steve Dunn.
  • Both listened well and then helped to advise and counsel.  Thanks guys!!!
  • Tonight I’m meeting with a great friend, Doug Coldsmith, who is visiting from out of town…can’t wait!
  • Last night I had a meeting about a potential new meeting location for ECTV.  Please be praying that all goes well.
  • Tonight is the start of another season of American Idol.  Can’t wait to see the chemistry between the new judges.  I think it will go well.
  • I’m really frustrated with the Orioles right now.  After the excitement of making the play-offs 2 years ago it seems like they are losing steam.  PLEASE sign someone already!
  • Lisa has been sick for over a week now…she finally went back to work yesterday but she’s still hacking pretty good.
  • To help her rest well (not hear my snoring) and for me to not catch it (hazardous to my job), I’ve been sleeping on the sofa for the past week…My back hurts.
  • We had 2 different cold weather issues effect our water system at the house.
  • Anyone know a good plumber?
  • I’ve enjoyed getting back to blogging…if you have ideas or questions you’d like me to address, please let me know.  Again the days are by categories.  Ministry Monday’s (anything related to ECTV or churches in general).  Topical Tuesday’s (my comments on things in the news)
    Whatever Wednesday (self-explanatory)
Theological Thursday’s (answering your theological questions…which by the way has been the most popular days so far)
Funny Friday’s (stuff that makes me laugh)
  • Again would really appreciate you letting me know what topics, questions, thoughts you might have so the blog is truly something we enjoy together.
