What’s the Coldest You’ve Ever Been?

January 7, 2014 by Gilbert 1 Comment

This is the first “Topical Tuesday” post and what topic is being discussed more than this week’s cold weather?  Today’s high here in Harrisburg is supposed to be 12 degrees which is actually quite balmy as compared to what others are dealing with.  I saw an article which mentioned a town in Minnesota where the wind chill is -65.  So all this got me to thinking…when was I the coldest in my life?  The answer was quite easy to come up with.

In my Sophomore year of college my friends and I were going to go somewhere south and warm for Spring Break but instead ended up renting a few cabins in the mountains of MD.  Our first day, we were having a great time, hiking around various trails, even though it was quite cold.  The plan the next day was a 4 mile hike through pretty rugged terrain to the Sideling Hill Road Cut and then hitch a ride back to our camp site.

Much to our surprise we woke up the next morning to 6 inches of snow already on the ground and it still snowing hard.  Being 8, “were indestructible” men, we decided to do the hike  anyway.  About a mile in 2 of the guys turned around and went back.  The rest of us proceeded up and down the smaller mountains and hills.  On the west side of the mountains the snow was knee deep from a snow fall the previous week that hadn’t melted.  We kept climbing peaks thinking we’d be able to see how far we were to the cut, but at some points it was near white out conditions.

This is when  it started to get a bit scary.  We were far enough along that it was too late to turn back, but yet we had no idea how much longer it was until the cut.  We had anticipated a 1/2 day trip but not it was starting to get dark…we were getting hungry again and oh my goodness were we freezing cold.  Thankfully we finally found a road and a carpet installation company van, saw us trudging along and asked if we were lost.  “NO, just hiking…but we sure could use a ride”.

Back at the cabins, it was not until the next day that I felt like I wasn’t cold anymore.  Looking back, there were so many stupid mistakes made by doing this, but it will always be a memory I have.  So what about you…what’s the coldest you’ve ever been?

Our New Mission Statement

January 6, 2014 by Gilbert 2 Comments

We are now 3 years into planting ExponentialChurch.tv and a few months back our staff and some other key leaders evaluated where we’re at and what we wish we knew then that we know now.  As a part of that process, we changed our mission statement to better reflect who we’ve become and the direction we feel God is leading us.  So our new mission statement is…

Helping people take life-changing next steps in their journey towards God.

Now obviously the question then becomes…”OK how do you do that?”  Our answer is below with each of the sub-steps.  In the coming weeks and months I’ll take more time to, in more detail, explore how we’re accomplishing each one.

EXPERIENCE
a.  Church in a new way.
b.  Jesus in a life-changing way.

ENGAGE
a.  With God’s Word.
b.  With others in biblical community.

EXPAND
a.  Your heart for serving.
b.  God’s message of love to the world.

To get a sneak peek at what I’ll be sharing, you can listen to 2 messages that I did this past fall on the topic.  The first was on God’s plan for all churches.  The second is more specific to God’s plan for us at Exponential.

Funny Friday’s featuring Dennis Wolfberg

January 3, 2014 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

If you read my post on Wednesday, you know that as I start back blogging, I have categorized each day in a different way.  I’m calling Friday’s “Funny Friday’s” and will share something that makes me laugh.

Comedy has always been a big part of my life.  As a kid I remember watching “Bill Cosby Himself” and thinking it was the greatest thing ever.  I bought the cassette tape version of it and would listen over and over again. I had most of it memorized and still to this day use a lot of the catch phrases in my everyday life.

Eventually as I got older and could stay up later, I started watching Saturday Night Live.  However, it was the show that came on right before that, that was my favorite.  It was called “Comic Strip Live” and was on for 1/2 hour on FOX.  Two guys really stood out.  One was ventriloquist, Jeff Dunham who has gone on to have a tremendous career.  Here he is in the early days as he was perfecting the Peanut routine.

But my favorite was a guy named Dennis Wolfberg.  He was a school teacher turned comedian and here is one of his routines about what that was like…enjoy!

Why Are Christians So Intolerant?

January 2, 2014 by Gilbert 1 Comment

I recently had a conversation with a man who asked…

“Why are you Christians so intolerant?”

I said, “I’ll answer that but first tell me what you mean.”

He said, “Well I constantly hear about Christians who are judging others and  try to tell others what is right and wrong.  Why can’t you guys just accept other people’s viewpoints…it’s so intolerant!”

To which I said,  “So what you’re saying is that whenever someone tells someone else their viewpoint is wrong that is intolerant and it should stop?”

He said, “Yes”.

I then politely pointed out that he was doing the very thing right then that he was accusing me and other Christians of.  He was saying that another person’s viewpoint (mine/Christians) was wrong and that we should accept his viewpoint.

Now I’ve known this guy for awhile and I know he was asking the question sincerely but he felt the need to quickly apologize even though I told him that wasn’t necessary. We then went on to have a great conversation about how the definition of tolerance has become distorted in America.  First, I’ll start with the dictionary definition of tolerance and then share some of the things I shared with him.

Webster’s DictionaryTolerance:  sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from or conflicting with one’s own

Look at that again.  By it’s very definition, tolerance means there will be conflicting viewpoints and that’s OK.  For example, I’m a huge fan of the Redskins and Capitals which is a bit of a problem when you live in an area that is filled with Steelers and Penguins fans.  If I were a fan of the Steelers and Penguins then no one would have to tolerate my like of REAL teams (FYI tongue firmly in cheek when looking at this year’s standings).  What I’m saying is, tolerance is only needed when there are conflicting points of view.

What our society however has tried to make tolerance into is that not only  must we accept each others point of view but that we must also accept that each others point of view is equally valid or truthful.  This is then where we must look at the difference between relative truth and absolute truth.

Relative truth says that what may be true for you may not be true for me.  It is what many people want we they say the word tolerance.  “You live your life, I’ll live my life and we won’t judge each other”.

Absolute truth on the other hand says that there are certain things that are true for all people, at all times and in all places.  Examples would be gravity, that you need oxygen to breath, that you can’t have a stick with one end, that 2+2=4.  With absolute truth, you can sincerely believe that gravity won’t impact you or that 2+2=7 but that just makes you sincerely wrong.  Now I can tolerate you having the wrong answer but that doesn’t mean it’s still not wrong.

Think of it this way, if your 1st grader kept insisting that 2+2=7 wouldn’t the most loving thing for you to do is try to correct them?  Would anyone accuse you of being intolerant?  Of being judgmental?  No of course not…you want what’s best for someone that you love.

With that being said, Christians truly believe that Jesus was God in the flesh, was crucified for our sins and came back to life just as He said He would.  We also believe Him when He says that He is truth and that NO ONE can come into a relationship with God except through Him.  We also take serious His command that we are to teach others all that he taught us.

Now why we believe everything in the previous paragraph is the subject of an entire other post but hopefully you can see now why Christians feel obligated to speak out about moral issues.  It’s not because we don’t love you…it’s because we do love you.  We accept that you have a differing point of view (that’s tolerance) but at the same time want to lovingly point out that there is a better way because 2+2 does not equal 7.

Now I’ll be honest, how some Christians go about doing this can be wrong…we are instructed by the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 4:15 to speak the truth but do it in love.  So, I apologize to some of you who have been hurt by Christians who violated this principle.  However, I hope you see that the intentions behind it are pure…not based on something that is our opinion but rather instead on something based on truth.

Again, I know some of you are saying that it may not be true so I’ll have to blog about the why’s in the future.  I’ll just say this for now.  I didn’t become a Christian until I was 20 years old…in investigating the claims of Jesus/the Bible I eventually got to the point that the evidence was so overwhelming that it was all true that it actually would have taken me more faith to believe it not to be true than to believe it is.

One last thought.  If you think that Jesus was tolerant based on our society’s definition, then please read the Gospel’s.  Constantly Jesus was pointing out the sin and error of people’s ways and telling them to change.  However, He does this not so that people would feel condemned but rather so they would turn to Him for the forgiveness of sin.  He then instructs us His followers to do likewise.  My point being this…while some Christians want to categorize sins into “the big ones” and the “small ones “, to God all sin is sin and the purpose of sin being pointed out isn’t to make you feel bad but so you turn to Jesus for forgiveness.

“If we confess our sins to God He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us from all of our unrighteousness”.  -1 John 1:9

“Now there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus”.- Romans 8:1

“If you love me then you will obey what I command” (Jesus) –John 14:15

The Blog is Back!

January 1, 2014 by Gilbert 1 Comment

When I started this blog back in 2007, I posted nearly every day for a couple of years.  About 2 years ago I got burnt out on it and began dramatically decreasing the number of posts with last year seeing only 4 new posts in total.

Well it’s time to fire it back up!  I’ve been thinking over the past few months about how to do it and what it would look like and here is what I’ve come up with.  Each day will have a different theme that will be spread out amongst many topics…

Ministry Monday’s-  Here I will talk about church related stuff.  This could be specifically about ExponentialChurch.tv where I pastor or it could be just something random that could help all churches in general.

Topical Tuesday’s- On this day I will comment on something that is currently in the news.

Whatever Wednesday’s-  On this day I’ll talk about whatever I want.  If there’s something I need or want to get out there but it doesn’t fit on any of the other days, here is where it will go.

Theological Thursday’s-  On this day I will answer questions about the bible, God, Christianity, etc.  I’m always getting asked interesting questions, so here is a chance for others to hear the answer(s) as well.  If you’ve got a question you’d like me to consider answering, you can email me here.  I will not use your name so feel free to ask anything!

Funny Friday’s- One of my personal values is to laugh everyday.  So on Friday’s I will share a story, clip or link of something that has made me laugh over the previous week.

So there you have it…a little bit of something different everyday.  I won’t feel obligated to post everyday so if I miss some here and there, don’t freak out.

With all that said, today is Whatever Wednesday so I’ll keep this one nice and short…

If you didn’t like the outcomes of 2013 and are hoping for better ones in 2014, it will involve you making better decisions.  Better decisions only come when you have better thinking.  To me, better thinking comes from reading God’s Word. So if you have never read the bible, make 2014, the year that you do so.  Now keep in mind that it isn’t 1 book, but rather a collection of 66 books, so I recommend you DON’T just start from the beginning and go to the end.  Rather start with the New Testament book of Matthew and proceed throughout the entire New Testament.  Then you can go back and read the Old Testament.

Have a Happy New Year everyone…hope you enjoy the new format to the blog!
