Other Weekend Thoughts

January 5, 2009 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • What an exhausting yet exhilirating weekend.
  • On Thurday Lisa’s brother J and his wife Faith came into town from NC.
  • It was great having them with us for the weekend and then going to Lisa’s sisters on Saturday so we could all have Christmas together.
  • Thursday night J and I decided at about 9PM to play BoomBlox on the Wii.  Next thing you know it’s 1am.
  • Because of the motion you ue to play the game, neither one of us could raise our right arms the next morning…in fact here it is Monday at noon and my arm still hurts.
  • We switched to shooting pool on Friday night…man I was terrible he beat me everytime…and it’s my table…guess that tells you how much I get to play.
  • Saturday morning I made one of my few visits to the hosptial to pray with a young lady who was told she was going to lose her baby…by the afternoon, eveyrthing was fine and it looks like she’ll carry it to full-term now…wow God is good!
  • Also Saturday morning was our practice time for Sunday (which is normally on Thursday’s)…what should have been a 10-12 practice never wrapped up until after 1 and it was nearly 2 before I left to come home…but man the results yesterday where well worth it.
  • Can’t get the song “Wonderful God” out of my head…not that I’m really trying though.
  • Spent Saturday night at the in-laws celebrating Christmas and then last night at a friends house…once again proving that Lisa and I make wonderful guests!  :)
  • I’m right on track with my goal to read through all of the New Testament in January.  I love when I do this because it helps put the Bible into such better context when you read all or most of the author’s original letter in one or two sittings.
  • How about you…are you reading His Word everyday?  As I said yesterday in the message…if you want to have a larger perspective of who God is and what He wants to do in your life, then reading His Word is critical.
  • So out of curiosity…anyone want to share a lion you’re chasing?  Comment below and we’ll pray for you!

Inside Today’s Experience

January 4, 2009 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • Great start to the New Year!
  • Had quite a few people move over to the 9:15…which freed up seats at 10:45…and we were still packed at 10:45.
  • One of our largest crowds ever…and oh boy did they pick a great day to come.
  • The worship team was on fire today…especially at the 9:15.
  • I think everyone was so pumped after that one that it was hard to top, but 10:45 was still really good.
  • I loved the entire set the team did…one of our best ever.
  • I wish every week went as smoothly as today…from a tech, musical and preaching standpoint everyone seemed to be on their game today and we had no technical glitches with computers like we’ve been having.
  • Talked with a lot of people who were pumped up and ready to chase their own lions!
  • Wow our church is full of band geeks!
  • No we don’t want to hear your stories that begin with, “This one time at band camp…”  :)
  • Again I can’t wait to hear the stories of goals achieved or obstacles overcome in the coming weeks and months…God is so much bigger than us and His power is so much stronger…Pursue your dreams…Chase the Lion!

Happy New Year!

January 1, 2009 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

Hope your new year is off to a great start so far.  Lisa and I hung out with a group of friends last night eating lots of great food and then sitting down for a game of Chickyfeet (a dominio’s game).  The game takes forever…in fact we never did finish…but the big lightbult moment came part way through when we realized that our big version of fun on New Year’s Eve was sitting playing dominio’s…man are we getting old.

This morning I did something that is becoming somewhat of a New Year’s tradition for me…I read through all of Jesus Sermon on the Mount…the greatest sermon ever preached.  Everytime I read it, it is a great reminder of how far God has brought me, but also a sobering reminder of how far I have yet to go.

As has become my custom, I’ll read through the entire New Testament in the month of January.  I do this for multiple reasons…number 1 it’s good for me.  Number 2 I do it and let people know about it in the hopes that you’ll at least considering reading that (if not the entire bible) in 1 whole year.  In other words, if I can do it in a month (in my free time), what’s your excsue for not being able to do it in a year?

Here’s the plan:

New Testament in a Year:  Read 5 chapters per week.  Come on that’s less than a chapter per day…you can do it!  If you want something that actually breaks it down day-by-day, try this.

Entire Bible in a Year:  Works out to be 3 chapters per day and then 5 on Sunday.  If you prefer to have a mix of both Old and New Testament each day, try this one.

In this new year I pray that God’s Word would become more real to you than it ever has in the past.  Remember though the goal is not just to get information but to be transformed by what you read.  So as you read it, be praying and asking God, what does this mean to me and how can I apply this to my life?  I believe that if you’ll do that consistently, 2009 will be your best year ever!

Top 5 Most Listened to Messages of 2008

January 1, 2009 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

Everyone probably can look back to 2008 and recall a Sunday Experience that really changed their lives in some way.  Some Experiences though speak so much that a buzz is created and people want to hear the message over and over again.  To follow are the top 5 most downloaded and listened to messages of 2008:

  1. A Time to Run– No surprise here…this message about sexual temptation didn’t just top the list of 2008 Podcasts, but is now the #1 most downloaded sermon in the nearly two years we’ve been posting them.
  2. Speak No Evil–  Guest Speaker, Cathy Pence hit us early, often and hard in this message on how to control the tongue.
  3. Live Like You Were Dying– If this one was on video, no doubt it would be #1.  This is the message where I was brought in in a coffin and then gave 3 practical steps to carry out if you only had 30 days left to live.
  4. Tears of the Saints–  What do you get when you cross a vision message with a healthy dose of convicting and challenging material and cap it off with Hannah singing an awesome version of Tears of the Saints?  It’s our number 4 most downloaded message and it’s not even yet a week old.
  5. As Is–  This message explored the topic of how when we are not authentic with others it will often lead to a life of loneliness.

Random Tuesday Night Thoughts

December 31, 2008 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • Had a great time speaking last night on the United stage to a few hundred rowdy teenagers from the community.
  • Since they were there for Next 2 Nothing and the Ryan Payne Band it was hard to get them to settle down…
  • …so I had to practically shout the entire message.  Luckily though it was only 15 minutes long.
  • Two cool things.  The closest kids were right up against the front of the stage so it made for easy eye contact…however since I was shouting, who knows how many got spit on.
  • The other cool thing was when they heard something they liked they would shout or clap…think the United crowd needs to do more of that…got me even more fired up!
  • Speaking of fired up…been getting lots of feedback from Sunday’s message.
  • I knew it would be controversial, but that’s a good thing…people are talking and truly evaluating their own motives.
  • One regret I have and where most of the “negative” feedback has come from is I forgot to put out a disclaimer that there are legitimate reasons why some people can’t come to the 9:15 Experience….sorry about that.
  • It wasn’t until late in our practice Friday night that we decided to switch and have Hannah do the lead vocals on Tears of the Saints…so glad we did…even last night I had teenagers from our church coming up saying how awesome the entire Experience was and how touched they were by Hannah’s singing.
  • As great as our music and sound is on Sunday’s though we learned again last night how much the multi-purpose room is designed for what we do.  It is just not a good concert venue for bands to come into…so while last night was fun in some ways…I hope we don’t do any more concerts because number one it’s unfair to the bands.
  • Then second it’s incredibly difficult for our volunteer tech teams to try to in a short amount of time take other people’s equipment and try to make it sound good.  We know the limitations of the room and have had to buy for our band special equipment and make some sacrafices to make things sound good, but there is no way a touring band would be willing to do the same.  So it’s almost a no-win situation going in which is incredibly frustrating for everyone involved.
  • I DVR’d the Maryland bowl game this afternoon and watched it this evening…they won so that helps alleviate any lingering frustration.
  • Well almost 11:30…guess I’ll read a little bit then head off to bed…night John-boy.
