Insider Language…The Big Reveal

April 17, 2008 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

Ok, the other day I shared some phrases that only mean something to me and 1 or 2 people. Read it here to see why I did it, but to follow is some of the who’s and the why’s.

  • “Schmoopie.”   This is one between Lisa and I and comes from a Seinfeld episode where I believe it was George and his girlfriend at the time called each other schmoopie as their pet name for each other.  In the episode they were obnoxious with it.  We thought that the episode was hilarious and jokingly started calling each other that for the next week…now here we are 10+ years later and we still have variations of it that we sometimes call each other.
  • “That’s awesome.”   This one is my friend Aaron’s favorite phrase recently.  He said the inspiration came from hanging out with Andy and I (whom we both way over inflated opinions of ourselves…especially when were working together).  So Aaron saw this commercial, thought of Andy and I and thus a new catchphrase was born.
  • “Oh carp.”   Andy and I are huge perfectionists.  I saw an ad for a t-shirt that says on the front side…”I’m a Prefectionist.”  Notice the misspelling…and then on the back it says, “Oh Carp.”  This became our phrase while spending many late hours getting the tech side of the new building completed.
  • Another one for the same person…”I’ve upped my standards…” Yet another one from Andy and I and also seen on t-shirts and bumper stickers.  The full phrase of course is “I’ve upped my standards, now up yours.”
  • “Say hello to Carlos, or Juan, or Jose’ or whatever his name was.” This is the newest one on the list and it belongs to Andy’s wife Gayle.  It’s a pretty funny story but I’ll let her decide whether to tell it or not….or you can just bug her to death until she does.
  • “How long is the line? Very good.”   Hmmm, just realized this one took place 2 years ago today.  Lisa, Andy, Gayle and I were all in Las Vegas for the National Association of Broadcaster’s convention and there was an exhibit to see the next generation beyond High-Definition television, but you had to wait in a line to go into the “movie theater” like room.  This technology is coming from Japan and the people working for the company spoke very little English.  We really wanted to see it, but the line was incredibly long…I kept asking the guy different variations of the question, “how long will we have to wait in line” but he always responded with a slight bow and the words “Very Good!”  Finally we gave up.
  • This is for two people…”Sheetz is hiring.” This one is for Adam and Brian on the worship team.  Both are and have been searching for jobs for months.  Since I love Sheetz, it’s always my recommendation to them.  They always laugh at me, but I think I’m wearing them down.
  • For siblings…”Peace in the middle east…Word to your mother.”  Contrary to popular belief, my favorite style of music is not rock, but rather R&B, Hip-Hop and Rap.  So Brian and Kelli Miller were shocked when I broke out some old school phrases on them one day.  Now we occasionally throw out some of these phrases just in our random conversations with each other.
  •  “Thank you Jesus that no one was injured during this job.”  This was a quote from Stan our Pastor of Visitation during the dedication service of the new building.  Andy and I quickly shot each other a glance and just started busting out laughing because we knew of all the blood that we and others had shed during the construction process.  Thankfully though Stan was right…no major injuries occurred which is remarkable considering the amount of people and the complexity of the project.
  • “Hello loser.” This is one between Gene our Youth Pastor and myself.  The context comes from when Dan Patrick used to have his radio show on ESPN and would interview Bob Costas.  Apparently for like 12 consecutive years they were both nominated for sportscaster of the year, and every year Costas would win.  I loved it when Dan Patrick would have Costas on his show because he’d always start by saying, “Let’s welcome 12 time sportscaster of the year Bob Costas to our show.”  And Costas would always start by saying, “Hello loser.”  Well the first week Gene bought the Wii for the youth room he and I played every game on it and I won them all.  The next day I had to go into his office for something and when I walked in he said, “Hi” to which my response was “hello loser.”  Now it’s sort of stuck and I still sometimes break it out although he now beats me from time to time in Wii games.
  • “Use dynamite…save time.”  Another one between Lisa and I, but one she hates.  This came from watching an episode of Winnie the Pooh with my sister as a kid and I think it was Tigger said this phrase about something.  In any case, I still break it out when a solution is needed to a problem and Lisa just rolls her eyes.
  • “I said all that to say this.”   What will inevitably be on the tombstone of my first pastor after I got saved and then later my boss in my first ministry position.  I love him to death, but he was/is a very long-winded speaker.  In fact, I heard that just recently one of his messages went for 75 minutes.  A part of the reason is that he’ll get off on rabbit trails and when he finally catches himself he’ll say, “I said all that to say this” and then he’ll go on with the point he was trying to make.
  • “GDT#3 don’t mess with me.”   I grew up during the days of wrestling making a big public comeback…me and all of my friends were little Hulkamaniacs.  Of course we all loved to wrestle and came up with our own names.  So this is one my sister would get because she joined in on the fun and was Tough Tara T…I took on the persona of GDT#3.  That’s simply my initials and since I’m the Gilbert Thurston III, and since “t” and “3” rhyme it just made sense to me.

The Cost of Opportunity Lost

April 16, 2008 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

I just read an interesting article about homeless shelters and it brought to mind a humorous story from when I used to pastor a church down in MD.  We had a guy who gave his life to Christ after having lived a very rough life, including having lived on the streets at various times in his life.  He was/is a great guy and was passionate that we start a homeless ministry in our church.  The problem was the town we were in only had a population of a few hundred and definitely didn’t have any homeless people.  He was adamant though that we spend a lot of time and money equipping the church for this ministry.

The lesson of course is you have to know your area and reach out in the way that will make the biggest impact.  Now yo might say, “But Gilbert what if you could have reached even just one homeless person?  Wouldn’t that have made it all worth it?”  The answer is two-fold…yes, everyone matters to God, but at the same time we’d have to ask “How many people did we fail to reach because we spent all of our time and money on something that had a minimal impact?”

This is called the “Cost of Opportunity Lost” and it applies well to our current series where were looking at how to have margin in our lives.  For every thing you say yes to with your time or money, you are by default saying no to hundreds of other things, some of which would have been a much better use of your limited resources.  So before you jump at the next thing that sounds like a good idea, stop and ask yourself, “Is this a God idea?”

Insider Language

April 15, 2008 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

As I mentioned the other day I went to a Catholic Church and a lot of it was very confusing because I didn’t know the customs, rituals or language. Let me give you an example that will illustrate it for you and be fun for me and a few others. Each of the following words or phrases are stink’in hilarious to me and one other person for each one…to you it will appear confusing and you’ll feel left out…that’s intentional…I want you to feel that emotion and realize that when we interact with non-Christians in the community or in our church they often times feel the exact same way because of our insider language. So here we go…13 phrases that 9 people will get at least 1 of them and laugh out loud.   In the coming days I’ll reveal the identities.

  • “Schmoopie.”
  • “That’s awesome.”
  • “Oh carp.”
  • Another one for the same person…”I’ve upped my standards…”
  • “Say hello to Carlos, or Juan, or Jose’ or whatever his name was.”
  • “How long is the line?  Very good.”
  • This is for two people…”Sheetz is hiring.”
  • For siblings…”Peace in the middle east…Word to your mother.”
  • “Thank you Jesus that no one was injured during this job.”
  • “Hello loser.”
  • “Use dynamite…save time.”
  • “I said all that to say this.”
  • “GDT#3 don’t mess with me.”

Other Weekend Thoughts

April 14, 2008 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • Friday I found out the flat tire was not defective but rather I had run over something.  Paul took care of it…again I highly recommend him if you need any auto work done.
  • I also attended a funeral on Friday in a Catholic Church.  It was a great reminder to me that people feel very uncomfortable coming into a church for the first time.  They did a lot of things that while I’m sure was very meaningful to them, made me very uncomfortable because I didn’t know when to stand or sit, what to say or sing, etc.
  • The above is one reason you hear me say a lot of the same things over and over again each week…yes to you it may seem repetitive, but for the first timer coming in, I want to make sure they understand what is going on and what is expected of them.
  • I’m also evaluating some other things to make sure we’re not assuming knowledge in areas where maybe we shouldn’t be.
  • I then got my haircut…wow I hate when my hair gets long…hey no bald jokes…I’ve still got plenty on the sides.
  • Saturday with a quick small groups meeting in the morning.  Many thanks to Dan Krull for taking the lead on these along with Jodi Zeis and running with this.
  • If you are not yet a part of a small group, you need to be…stop by the small groups table in the main lobby to meet Dan and find a group that’s right for you.
  • Saturday afternoon Lisa and I drove west on Rt. 30 all the way to McConnellsburg , enjoying the beautiful day, the scenery and hoping to find a nice restaurant along the way….uhhh…we’re still waiting.  Anyone have a suggestion?  I was even willing to eat at the bar at the top of the mountain, but wow was it smoky…my asthma wouldn’t have handled that too well.
  • Saturday night we chilled out…big props to Dennis Koontz for making this possible.
  • You already know what happened Sunday morning.
  • Sunday night was by far the best lesson in our current series in CAYA.
  • And then afterwards we had our Wii Bowling Tournament.
  • Each team had to come up with a team name.  Carrie Schofield was on my team and we named ourselves, “The Predestined Winners”.
  • Now if this is the part where you think I eat humble pie because we were way to confidient, you would be…..wrong.  We crushed the competition.
  • Yeah, that’s how I roll!   :)

Inside Today’s Experience

April 13, 2008 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • Another great Experience!
  • Another record crowd!
  • Great energy in the room today!
  • It was another one of those days where the ushers couldn’t get chairs out fast enough.
  • I thought the worship team knocked it out of the park…great job everyone!
  • From a tech standpoint we had new people on sound, lighting and projection.  Way to go…Chris, Barb and Amy for a flawless job!
  • All in all set-up this morning was pretty routine with only a couple minor glitches.
  • I’m praying that the message hits home for some people and they start getting serious about getting financial margin.
  • I had quite a few people come up to me afterward who started tithing after the Mind Your Own Business series telling me how much God has done for them…that’s awesome!
  • At the end of the message after walking off stage I realized I needed to immediatly check with our head usher on something but yet I also knew I needed to dismiss everyone…so I sprinted all the way around the outside of the multi-purpose room, got my question answered then  started sprinting back.  I could hear where the music was and literally ran onto the stage at the proper time…if it sounded like I was out of breath when I dismissed…it’s beacuse I was.
  • Tonight is CAYA, but before that, I’m napping, watchng the Caps continue their amazing run, and I’ll check out some Master’s coverage to see how Tiger does…it’s nice have some margin in the schedule on Sunday’s!
