Thanksgiving 2011

November 24, 2011 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

Hard to believe but this is now my 5th year doing these posts ( 2007,  2008,  2009, 2010).  As always here are the things I’m thankful for in this past year.

  1. Jesus-  Well who else did you expect at #1?  As every year passes, I realize more and more how ugly, sinful and broken I am inside.  Yet Jesus loved me enough not to just be my friend, but to die for me so that my relationship to Him could be even greater.  I don’t deserve a love like that and so my only acceptable response is  to offer a life of sacrifice back to Him.
  2. Lisa-  Again who were you expecting?  Before each of my bi-monthly calls with my church planting coach (thankful for Vince’s friendship as well), I have to fill out a form reporting on various areas of my life and ministry.  One of the questions is, “How is your marriage”?  Recently during a time when I was feeling a bit down and depressed, I wrote for this question, “No matter what else is going on, this is the one area that I can count on to be great”.  Trust me, Lisa has far more to do with that than I do.  Every year I can’t imagine our marriage getting any better but yet it does…wow I’m such a lucky man that God gave me such a Godly wife.  Her passion, hunger for growth and servant spirit are truly an inspiration to me.
  3. My immediate family- I’ve seen my mom, dad, sister and niece as much in the past year as I probably did in the 10 years prior to that.  The irony is I had to move further away from them for it to happen.  Regardless, one of the highlights of my week is knowing that I’ll get to see them on Sunday mornings.   I’ll see them again today and tomorrow and I’m sure there will be times that we pick-on each other but underneath it all is a love and a bond with and for one another that can not be broken no matter how many miles the highway may now separate us.
  4. My cousins- This year has also given me a few times to reconnect with my cousins that I grew up with.  Life and circumstances have kept us a part for many years but I’m looking forward to hopefully more opportunities to  hang-out and reconnect.
  5. My long-term friends-   Andy, Gayle, Bill and Nicole.  It’s been an interesting year and not at all how I had envisioned it but yet these 4 at multiple times and in many ways continue to be there for and with me.  Words can’t describe how grateful I am for the 10+ years they’ve put up with me.
  6. My new friends I’m developing-  Some of these are at church but many of them are from the community.  As I mentioned in our current series, one of the problems many pastors have is waking up one day and realizing you don’t have any significant relationships with people who are far from God.  So this year I have been intentionally going out and building new friendships.  Not only have I been having fun meeting new people and hanging out, but a few I can see as becoming close friends.  Most significantly I can already see the difference I’ve been able to make in people’s lives.
  7. My staff- Chad, Bill and Chelsea.  To be quite honest, I’m in way over my head with this whole church planting thing, but these 3 make me look a lot better than I am.  I’m so grateful God has brought us together as a team and can’t wait to see how God will use us to further His Kingdom.  It’s an honor to be able to lead them and I pray I do it well.
  8. That ExponentialChurch.tv survived it’s first year-  I wish this were hyperbole but it’s not.  Most church plants die within their first 3 years.  We’ve got one of those under our belts but we’re not out of the woods quite yet.  However, as I already mentioned we have a great staff that’s sold out to seeing God’s Kingdom advance.  More importantly we have many others who serve week end and week out because they realize that life is not about them but in helping people far from God come back into a relationship with Him and then grow to become more like Him.  Thanks to all for an incredible year where we’ve now seen over 120 people come into a relationship with Jesus…but remember…the best is yet to come!
  9. Lisa’s business/God’s blessing- In order to start ExponentialChurch.tv, we had to sacrifice a lot to move here to Harrisburg.  One such sacrifice was I voluntarily took a 23% reduction in salary.  This meant the possibility that Lisa might have had to get a job (which would have been a huge sacrifice on her part because of health issues).  However, despite it all we continued to tithe and trust that you can’t out give God.  Sure enough He began to bless her business ,which for years had pretty much always made the same amount of money.  All of the sudden…through no real effort of her own, she has been swamped with work which has allowed her to stay at home!
  10. Chuck Frank- Chuck is a long-time friend and more recently became the Director of Church Planting for the Eastern Regional Conference of the Churches of God General Conference (catchy isn’t it).  It was Chuck’s email that spurred on the vision I had for Exponential originally.  Over the past year he and his team have been incredibly helpful and generous in numerous ways in helping us launch.  Chuck is a great cheerleader for planting and evangelism and his support this past year has been invaluable.
  11. Technology-  It can be both a blessing and a curse but for the most part I am very thankful for all that technology allows us to do.  Especially this past year I am grateful for two tools that make my life so much easier.  The first is www.audible.com.  Audio books have been around along time, but now with the ability to download them to my smart phone and then play back through blue-tooth on my car stereo, life is so much easier.  Literally I turn my car into a mobile classroom and can usually get through 3-4 books per month just during my normal driving time.  The second tool I’m thankful for is the Getting Things Done Outlook Add-In Tool.  One of the audio books I listened to this past year was Getting Things Done by David Allen.  His system is tremendous and when I found out there was an add-in for Outlook, it was an easy decision to spend the $70+.  My life, tasks and schedule have never been more organized and de-cluttered and for that I am very thankful!

Inside Today’s Experience (vacation edition)

September 4, 2011 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • First here is Bill’s message from today.  168-Hour Energy.
  • Had a great week in Williamsburg, VA on vacation.
  • Kind of weird though since the city was without power for much of the week.
  • Thankfully our resort had power all week long.
  • Guess you see where priorities are.  :)
  • Saturday we drove to WV to spend the night with our friends Bill and Nicole.
  • Andy and Gayle came down as well and we celebrated Andy’s birthday.
  • Really it was just an excuse to eat Gayle’s mom’s cupcakes!
  • Today we went to church at New Life Christian Ministries.
  • I got saved at New Life, discipled there, went on staff there and eventually became a pastor there.
  • They were one of the 30+ churches that supported us as we launched 10 1/2 months ago and they have a part in the now 100 salivations that have taken place.  Thanks NLCM.
  • It’s been 8+ years since I left staff so there are now far more people there that I don’t know than I do.
  • It’s always good though to see some familiar faces.
  • Especially good to see the founding and Senior Pastor of New Life, Ken Harris.
  • PK next to my wife Lisa has probably been the greatest spiritual influence in my life.
  • When it comes to my love for Jesus and His Word, you can look no further than him.
  • Through the years our ministry styles have greatly differed but even in that, he helped influence one of our core values which is, “It takes all types of churches to reach all types of people”.
  • It was great to be back in their new facility they moved into last year and see the growth they’re experiencing even with it being a holiday weekend.
  • Pastor Ken apologized when we walked in that they were doing a retro day music wise.
  • However, I liked it because it meant all songs I knew so it was nice to be able to worship without having to look at the screens.
  • New Life likes to worship and after 40+ minutes of music and their extended greeting time, PK began his message on persecution.
  • As always it was a good message…here are a couple of quotes I wrote down in my notes.
    • “People point out the wrong in you so they feel better about the wrong in themselves”.
    • “It’s hard to grow a garden but it’s easy to grow weeds”.  This was said in the context of it’s easy to do the wrong thing but often hard to do the right thing.
    • “One of the best ways you can witness to people is to clean up your dirty mouth”.
    • After this quote, PK told a story of how he recently posted a scripture on Facebook (can’t remember which one) about watching your language.  He said he put it as a witness to unbelievers but had about a dozen Christians comment saying they were guilty.  This doesn’t read funny but it was when he told it.  Regardless, hope people take it seriously…and as I’ve said recently myself, abbreviating it Facebook is just as wrong.
    • “It’s more important to win someone to Christ than it is to win an argument with them”.  That’s good preaching.
  • Ok now for the funny part…or at least the part I found funny.
  • PK likes to preach…I mean an hour+.
  • He himself used to joke that the week after vacation was the worst because he had 2 weeks of talking to get out.  :)
  • In any case, his outline today was 4 points.  Point 3 had 4 subpoints.
  • The funny thing was I preached an entire 30+ minute message on just 2 of those sub-points just a 2 weeks ago.
  • I kept thinking…”Kenny you’ve got an entire series in just today’s message…save it man, save it”.  :)
  • Again though our styles are really different and for that I’m grateful.  As the old saying goes, “If two people are exactly alike then one of them is not necessary”.
  • The really funny part was in my message I actually told a story of his about how he used to get raises at work when nobody else did.  Then today he tells the same story.  Weird.
  • In any case, the message was really practical.  New Life’s motto is, “Learning Real Christianity in a Real World”.
  • Persecution is definitely a real thing and PK gave some great advice on how to deal with it from a biblical perspective.
  • Afterward we stuck around and talked to as many people as we could…until finally getting kicked out.
  • So I got kicked out of church today…how about you?
  • Wait is that persecution for being friendly?  :)
  • Double wait…did I just use myself and the word friendly in the same sentence?  What is this world coming to?
  • Ok seriously, I can’t wait to get back to work this week.
  • Next Sunday for 9-11 we’ll be doing a special look at the hope that was found in the tragedy through a film called, “The Cross and the Towers”.
  • Invite as many people as you can to take part in this special event unlike anything we’ve ever done.
  • I’ve created a Facebook invite for you to share on your wall.

Inside Today’s Experience (vacation edition)

June 27, 2011 by Gilbert 4 Comments

  • First, I know this is a day late, but I’m on vacation, give me a break!
  • Second, I wasn’t at ExponentialChurch.tv on Sunday so I don’t have much to comment on other than from what I hear you had a good day.
  • Missed everyone in Harrisburg…but with an off Sunday Lisa and I decided to visit our former church in Chambersburg.
  • The day actually started out in WV after having spent the night at our friends, Bill and Nicole’s, house.  Had a great time catching up with them.
  • Still holding out hope that they will one day join Lisa, Andy, Gayle and myself here in Harrisburg.
  • Any way, back to CFCOG…it was great seeing so many people and of course getting the “What are you doing here” questions.
  • It’s funny how many people think that pastors never get to get away or are nervous to get away.
  • First, Lisa and I make it a priority to vacation ever year and second, we have such a great staff and team that I wasn’t worried at all.
  • I was actually surprised how many people got emotional seeing me there.  It is nice to be missed, but I know that God has us right where He wants us and I know that things have continued well since I’ve been gone and God has even bigger things in store for CFCOG.
  • Many years ago I realized that no one person is bigger than a church if it’s on mission.
  • We decided to go to the early United Worship Experience (the two Experiences I led when I was there) but was disappointed that my replacement Kevin was also on vacation.
  • Instead it was a recap of the VBS like activities that had happened over the previous week.
  • Sounds like Kristy and her team had a tremendous week and 22 kids prayed to receive Jesus!
  • I really liked this alternate way of doing VBS and if and when we’re ready to do something at ECTV, this style is something I’ll definitely recommend to Chelsea.
  • As for the music and tech for the day, lots has changed.
  • Some things I liked, others not so much but I’m glad they are still as passionate as ever to lead people in worship of Jesus!
  • To file under Murphy’s Law, all 3 projection screens went dead for 3 of the 4 songs they did.
  • However, Brian did a great job of reminding people that we didn’t come to worship technology but Jesus.
  • The crowd seemed to know most of the songs because I could hear people singing…so that was cool that people still could sing along.
  • I can hear an older person now going, “We never lost the lyrics in a hymnal”.  :)
  • The other surprise was getting to hear Chrissy Miller speak as a part of the sermon.
  • For someone who doesn’t get an opportunity to do much public speaking, she did a phenomenal job…very poised and articulate.
  • After a quick 15 minute break, we ended up going over to the sanctuary for the Encounter service.
  • Other than music it was basically the same presentation as in United.
  • Considering they were using the same people to do all 5 services, they did a great job of shuttling people back and forth and the appropriate times.
  • I also got to thinking this means that Earl preached the same sermon (albeit abbreviated) 5 times in the span of about 2 1/2 hours.
  • That’s hardcore…just one sermon is a taxing thing physically and emotionally but to do 5 that close together earns him an iron man award for the day.
  • It was interesting as well seeing the same thing but in two different venues (multi-purpose room & sanctuary).
  • Never realized how much more color “pops” in the sanctuary than it does in the MPR.
  • Also, I’m going to have to get on Earl about starting to wear some make-up to cut down on the glisten when they have close-ups of him on IMAG.
  • Bet that conversation is going to go over well.  :)  Earl + make-up= sign of the End of Times.
  • The highlight of Encounter for me was seeing Karl lead worship.
  • He is one of the coolest young guys you’d want to meet and has such a heart for Jesus.  Add on top of that the incredible talent he has and it made for a very cool moment seeing him shine as Jesus shone through him.
  • Afterward Kris and Jenny Shifler were kind enough to host a picnic for the old United team.
  • It was great catching up with everyone, eating, joking, reminiscing and playing corn hole.
  • After that we stopped by my sister and brother-in-laws house for yet another picnic.
  • By the time we got there we were stuffed and wore out but we had a good time eating crabs, hanging out and again playing corn-hole.
  • Sunday was a great way to wrap-up the first week of vacation…looking forward to 1 more week of relaxing and then it’s back to an all out assault on depopulating hell.

Inside Today’s Experience

February 27, 2011 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • What a day!
  • I was just thanking God the other day for how smoothly things have been going.
  • Oops spoke too soon.
  • Set-up went really well…even have a couple new people helping out which is a huge asset to a team that was already functioning on all cylinders.
  • When it came time for the band to do their morning warm-up, we noticed that Bill’s mic was distorting badly.
  • I won’t go into all the details, but it spread to Gayle’s mic as well.
  • We tried all kinds of things…switching their mics, trying corded mics, switching locations for the wireless receivers, changing channels on the front of house board,  changing channels on the back of house board…
  • We never did get it completely resolved but finally went with what was the best of the worst.
  • I’m not discounting some spiritual warfare going on.  I know Satan was not happy that we were going to get serious about some usually not talked about topics so he was doing whatever he could to discourage us.
  • Haha jokes on you Satan…goin have to try harder than that.
  • Other than that it was a good day…a few minor things here and there but nothing major.
  • Of course the big topic of the day was how will Gilbert handle all these questions about marriage, dating, relationships and sex.
  • To be honest, I was not nervous at all because I intentionally was keeping it as biblical as possible with very little personal opinion.
  • Still…talking about things like porn, masturbation and oral sex is not easy…especially with a bunch of people staring at you…and your wife sitting in the crowd…and the director of church planting and executive director of our region of the denomination in the crowd.
  • Still I’m pleased with how it all went.
  • Especially proud of the Wordle Picture that is the picture for this post.  It shows the amount of times a word was used in the message by size.  Notice that even in a message that was pretty edgy, the 4 biggest words are God, Jesus, bible and marriage!
  • I knew it was going to be a long message but I wanted to get as many questions answered as possible.
  • Unfortunately, the live questions via text never made it to me until after the Experience…luckily the broken crock pot question that came in yesterday was still fresh in my mind.
  • So many things I could say about today’s message but you’ll just need to listen for yourself.
  • All in all I was pleased with the response afterward.
  • Had some guys asking for help and the overall response was thank you for being so open and honest about topics like this and keeping it biblical.
  • Honestly I can’t think of any other way to be.
  • Why would you want to go to church only to hear something watered down that makes you simply feel good.
  • Oh wait I remember.
  • Great to have our good friends Bill and Nicole up from WV today to visit and then hang out.
  • Next week we begin a new series called ME*TRADE where we’ll look at what to do when life just seems to be in a rut.
  • Going to be powerful…make sure you invite a lot of people to come along with you!

Review of Preview Experience on 9/12/10

September 13, 2010 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • Been awhile since I’ve been able to do an Inside Today’s Experience blog post and it shows since I’m not almost 36 hours late getting this posted.
  • What a weekend…exciting and tiring all at the same time.
  • My Dad and Andy traveled out to Troy, Michigan Thursday night into Friday morning, picked up a lot our equipment and then turned right around and drove home.
  • Saturday morning everyone gathered at the theater at 7am to unpack and test equipment for the first time.
  • We still have a lot of stuff on back order so we were improvising on some things but all in all it went well and we felt confident going into Sunday.
  • Before I go further, let me throw in a couple of relevant points.
    • Our team is amazing.  They have been putting in dozens of hours each week and I’ve hardly heard any complaining at all.  Let me say it again…they are amazing and surely God is going to reward them for all the hard work they’ve been doing.
    • Other churches are just as amazing.  So far over 30 churches now are helping support us in some way.  I’ll do a blog post in the future to recognize them all and share some inspiring stories of what can happen when the capital “C” church truly cares about lost people and realizes we’re all on the same team.  This past weekend and future weekends wouldn’t be possible without great leaders who are sacrificing time, money, equipment and people to help us.
  • One example of the last point is that we went from no lights at all just 2 weeks ago, to two churches donating entire lighting rigs and others financially contributing so we could buy even more , which “just happened” to be on sale for 50% off when we went in to buy them).
  • Problem was we couldn’t get everything to work together lighting wise on Saturday morning so Andy I worked at his house until 9pm in his garage and front yard setting up a fake stage.
  • Oh the adventures he and I have had together over the past 17 years.  Next to God and Lisa, I couldn’t ask for a better friend and partner to do ministry and life together with!  And Gayle’s not so bad herself  :)
  • I slept like a baby and then we were all at the theaters again at 7am, but this time to do it for real.
  • Everything went fairly smooth with set-up except we couldn’t get some of our signage assembled the right way and even though Andy and I had the lights working, we didn’t have time to write any light scenes so we went with a solid blue look the entire Experience.
  • Not bad though…our goal was to by the end of the weekend be at about 80% efficiency and effectiveness…think we did at least that.
  • In addition to our team we were joined by volunteers from 5 other churches.  Thanks to everyone who came on a short-term missions trip to the deep, dark jungles of Harrisburg to help reach out.
  • Again we have some bugs that needs to be worked out but I thought overall our lobby presentation and signage, our kids areas and main adult worship spaces looked amazing.
  • As for the Preview itself, it’s sort of one of those catch-22’s.  You want enough guests to show up so you can see if the systems we put in place work, but at the same time you don’t want so many people that with everything not being at 100% you make a negative first impression.
  • So with all that said, our total attendance for the day including helpers and kids was 86 people!
  • I just realized that for this Preview we actually had more people than the average church in America does (72) for one of their regular services.
  • Wow God is good and the best is yet to come!
  • If you’re interested in getting a taste of what happened yesterday, here is a link to a simple video I put together with some highlights of the Preview.
  • In addition to the 86 people we also had some news media folks who showed up.
  • Last week I did an interview with the Patriot Newspaper and they sent out one of their photographers to shoot some shots.
  • I would expect the article to come out in the next week or two.
  • Also ABC27 News sent a film crew out to take some footage and do an interview.
  • Funny thing was we had already started the Experience when one of our team members informed me that they were there and wanted to do an interview but couldn’t wait around until the end.
  • So I left during the worship set…did a quick interview and then got back just in time to deliver the message.
  • The news clip has run a total of 3 different times and we’re appreciative of the nice feature they did on us.  You can watch it here if you haven’t yet seen it.
  • Bill and the band did an incredible job and every kid I talked to was excited about what Chelsea had to offer in the ECTV Kid’s Theater.  Add in Chad running around making sure behind the scenes stuff was happening and our staff did a tremendous job…in fact I gave them all the day off so they could rest and recuperate after weeks on end of hard work.  Great job guys…love partnering with you!
  • We’re already getting a lot of positive feedback from the weekend and we can’t wait to do it again on September 26th…although it’s nice to have a week here to “breathe”.
  • I preached about how none of us grow up wanting to be the guy who cleans port-o-pots or cleans up road kill yet many times the dreams we had for a life of significance gets shot down.  The result is we get into survival mode instead of being the community and world-changers God has called us to be.  When we occasionally do get a spark to do something great, is when the naysayers come out and start saying things like, “Well perhaps that will happen…I mean maybe you can do it”.  These discouraging words cause us to retreat back into our safe, comfortable lives where our biggest goal is winning the rat race.  So the big idea from yesterday was that “God’s promise is always bigger than my perhaps”.
  • I truly believe that if Jesus could use 12 ordinary guys to change the world then He can take the people of ExponentialChurch.tv and use us to change Harrisburg and beyond.
  • Partnering with other churches and ministries in the city to win it for Christ is not a very popular message as evidenced by the guy who refused to shake my hand on the way out the door.
    • Here’s the sad part…I’d almost guarantee he is a part of another church and was there to check out the weird new church in town who doesn’t do things the way his church does.  In other words in his mind, the right way.  But instead of celebrating that more people will be in heaven one day because of our combined efforts, he instead made it very evident that he was offended.  The reason this is so sad is what he doesn’t realize is that it’s attitudes like that actually push people further from Jesus.
    • I post this for a reason…ExponentialChurch.tv is not doing church the right way or the only way…just a different way.  We desire to be a church for people who don’t like church not just do things because “that’s the way they’ve always been done”.
    • Sorry if that sounds like a bit of a rant, but as I said in yesterday’s message, “The church has been called to domination and we’ve become all about conversations about topics that really don’t matter”.  Is it any wonder the church in America is on the decline and we are the laughingstock of the world as even they realize how stupid it is for Christians to argue over worship styles?
  • Tearing everything down afterward went quicker than I anticipated which is a good thing because when we eventually go to two different Experience times on Sunday mornings it will force us to tear down in only 1/2 hour.
  • Even though I was tired, I then went out to lunch with two future church planters who were in town to help and observe everything we were doing.
  • Hopefully we showed them more good than bad.
  • Great guys and they asked a lot of great questions at lunch.
  • After that we hosted our good friends Bill and Nicole Mellott from West Virgina for a couple of hours at the house.  They are another couple that we’ve done life deeply together with and we’re still praying that God would somehow make it possible for them to move up here as well.
  • After that then we went over to Andy and Gayle’s for dinner with them and the Chute’s.  Mmmm grilled chicken kabobs and I even treated myself to a Mellow Yellow which I haven’t had in years.
  • It was a long day, but one that I’m extremely excited about and feel the hard work and effort of the entire team will pay-off big time as we move forward!
  • Thanks for reading all this…if you’re just checking us out for the first time, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me if you have any questions.  Gilbert@ExponentialChurch.tv
