Thanksgiving 2011

November 24, 2011 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

Hard to believe but this is now my 5th year doing these posts ( 2007,  2008,  2009, 2010).  As always here are the things I’m thankful for in this past year.

  1. Jesus-  Well who else did you expect at #1?  As every year passes, I realize more and more how ugly, sinful and broken I am inside.  Yet Jesus loved me enough not to just be my friend, but to die for me so that my relationship to Him could be even greater.  I don’t deserve a love like that and so my only acceptable response is  to offer a life of sacrifice back to Him.
  2. Lisa-  Again who were you expecting?  Before each of my bi-monthly calls with my church planting coach (thankful for Vince’s friendship as well), I have to fill out a form reporting on various areas of my life and ministry.  One of the questions is, “How is your marriage”?  Recently during a time when I was feeling a bit down and depressed, I wrote for this question, “No matter what else is going on, this is the one area that I can count on to be great”.  Trust me, Lisa has far more to do with that than I do.  Every year I can’t imagine our marriage getting any better but yet it does…wow I’m such a lucky man that God gave me such a Godly wife.  Her passion, hunger for growth and servant spirit are truly an inspiration to me.
  3. My immediate family- I’ve seen my mom, dad, sister and niece as much in the past year as I probably did in the 10 years prior to that.  The irony is I had to move further away from them for it to happen.  Regardless, one of the highlights of my week is knowing that I’ll get to see them on Sunday mornings.   I’ll see them again today and tomorrow and I’m sure there will be times that we pick-on each other but underneath it all is a love and a bond with and for one another that can not be broken no matter how many miles the highway may now separate us.
  4. My cousins- This year has also given me a few times to reconnect with my cousins that I grew up with.  Life and circumstances have kept us a part for many years but I’m looking forward to hopefully more opportunities to  hang-out and reconnect.
  5. My long-term friends-   Andy, Gayle, Bill and Nicole.  It’s been an interesting year and not at all how I had envisioned it but yet these 4 at multiple times and in many ways continue to be there for and with me.  Words can’t describe how grateful I am for the 10+ years they’ve put up with me.
  6. My new friends I’m developing-  Some of these are at church but many of them are from the community.  As I mentioned in our current series, one of the problems many pastors have is waking up one day and realizing you don’t have any significant relationships with people who are far from God.  So this year I have been intentionally going out and building new friendships.  Not only have I been having fun meeting new people and hanging out, but a few I can see as becoming close friends.  Most significantly I can already see the difference I’ve been able to make in people’s lives.
  7. My staff- Chad, Bill and Chelsea.  To be quite honest, I’m in way over my head with this whole church planting thing, but these 3 make me look a lot better than I am.  I’m so grateful God has brought us together as a team and can’t wait to see how God will use us to further His Kingdom.  It’s an honor to be able to lead them and I pray I do it well.
  8. That ExponentialChurch.tv survived it’s first year-  I wish this were hyperbole but it’s not.  Most church plants die within their first 3 years.  We’ve got one of those under our belts but we’re not out of the woods quite yet.  However, as I already mentioned we have a great staff that’s sold out to seeing God’s Kingdom advance.  More importantly we have many others who serve week end and week out because they realize that life is not about them but in helping people far from God come back into a relationship with Him and then grow to become more like Him.  Thanks to all for an incredible year where we’ve now seen over 120 people come into a relationship with Jesus…but remember…the best is yet to come!
  9. Lisa’s business/God’s blessing- In order to start ExponentialChurch.tv, we had to sacrifice a lot to move here to Harrisburg.  One such sacrifice was I voluntarily took a 23% reduction in salary.  This meant the possibility that Lisa might have had to get a job (which would have been a huge sacrifice on her part because of health issues).  However, despite it all we continued to tithe and trust that you can’t out give God.  Sure enough He began to bless her business ,which for years had pretty much always made the same amount of money.  All of the sudden…through no real effort of her own, she has been swamped with work which has allowed her to stay at home!
  10. Chuck Frank- Chuck is a long-time friend and more recently became the Director of Church Planting for the Eastern Regional Conference of the Churches of God General Conference (catchy isn’t it).  It was Chuck’s email that spurred on the vision I had for Exponential originally.  Over the past year he and his team have been incredibly helpful and generous in numerous ways in helping us launch.  Chuck is a great cheerleader for planting and evangelism and his support this past year has been invaluable.
  11. Technology-  It can be both a blessing and a curse but for the most part I am very thankful for all that technology allows us to do.  Especially this past year I am grateful for two tools that make my life so much easier.  The first is www.audible.com.  Audio books have been around along time, but now with the ability to download them to my smart phone and then play back through blue-tooth on my car stereo, life is so much easier.  Literally I turn my car into a mobile classroom and can usually get through 3-4 books per month just during my normal driving time.  The second tool I’m thankful for is the Getting Things Done Outlook Add-In Tool.  One of the audio books I listened to this past year was Getting Things Done by David Allen.  His system is tremendous and when I found out there was an add-in for Outlook, it was an easy decision to spend the $70+.  My life, tasks and schedule have never been more organized and de-cluttered and for that I am very thankful!

Inside Today’s Experience

April 25, 2011 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • Guess we’ll have to call this the Monday edition.
  • We didn’t get home until after 10pm last night from a wonderful day of Easter activities and by then my brain was too fried to do this post…so here it is a day late.
  • Let me start by saying how proud I am of our team.  This was probably the least stressful Easter I’ve had since being a pastor.
  • Everyone knows their roles and does them very well…going the extra mile to make the ordinary, extraordinary.
  • Being the nut for excellence that I am, doesn’t mean I still don’t check and sometimes double check, but 99% of the time things are exactly as they should be and the little extra things to make something even better have already been implemented or thought of.
  • With all that said, we had a great Easter Experience!
  • Had our 3rd largest crowd ever…which made the theater feel nice and full.
  • Most importantly we had 7 people make decisions to become followers of Jesus!
  • As for the day itself, set-up went very smooth with nothing out of the ordinary.
  • Big thanks to Jeff and Alana Case for cutting their vacation a day short to come back to be with us so Jeff could do all his guitar magic.
  • FYI…they also host our practice every Thursday night in Jeff’s basement studio…oh and Alana makes us all dinner as well…awesome couple…couldn’t do what we do without them.
  • Also big thanks to Chuck and Tammy Frank.  Chuck is the director of church planting for our region of the Churches of God General Conference.
  • It was Chuck’s email in October of 2009, that God used to give me the vision for ExponentialChurch.tv.
  • In any case, we had a lot of families out of town this weekend that normally serve and so Chuck and Tammy came to not only celebrate Easter with us but to also serve on our First Impressions Team.  Thanks!
  • We threw a lot of extra elements in the Experience itself but everything went off pretty well…for the things that didn’t we covered them in such a way that nobody even knew.
  • No I’m not telling you!
  • The band as always did a phenomenal job…I could tell they were really feeding off the energy of the crowd.
  • As for my message, I talked about how many things in life “mark” us and how the marks Jesus took have changed history and has the power to change lives as well.  You can listen to it here.
  • Loved the song /music video the band did coming right out of my message called, “Beautiful Things”.  It really brought home the point that God wants to take the old and turn us into something new.
  • Afterward the buzz in the lobby was awesome…met so many new people who were really excited about what’s happening.
  • Wish I could share all their comments but just a few were…”best church service I’ve ever been to”…”I didn’t want it to end”…”I haven’t been to church for years but I’ll be back”…”very moving”…”thank you, that’s exactly what I needed to hear”.
  • Had a nice mix of guests come from personal invites, our Facebook posts and ads, our mailer and even one couple that came because they saw our signs out on Sunday morning and said, “Maybe we should go to a church this morning”.   That’s awesome…huge thanks to Mike Sellers for faithfully coming in earlier than anyone else every Sunday and getting the signs out by the road and intersections.
  • We video taped the entire Experience yesterday (with the exception of a couple minute period near the end when the camera shut off) to see what it looks/sounds like.  Hopefully it came out well and I’ll be able to post it for you to watch online soon.
  • Once we were done we went to MD to visit and have lunch with family and then from there went to WV to visit with friends and have dinner.
  • Also found out I was quoted in yesterday’s Patriot News on my thoughts about using social media in the church.
  • Excited about the kick-off next week to the iLife series.
  • We’re giving away 4 FREE iPads to those in attendance (reminder you have to be present to win).
  • Been hearing some cool stories of how people are getting the tickets out to their friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers.
  • Remember the more people you invite, the greater your chances of winning so keep getting those tickets out…if you need more let me know we still have a few left.
  • In the meantime, I’ve got a busy day ahead…I leave tomorrow for a conference in Florida…supposed to be in the low 90’s…oh yeah!

Inside Today’s Experience

February 27, 2011 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • What a day!
  • I was just thanking God the other day for how smoothly things have been going.
  • Oops spoke too soon.
  • Set-up went really well…even have a couple new people helping out which is a huge asset to a team that was already functioning on all cylinders.
  • When it came time for the band to do their morning warm-up, we noticed that Bill’s mic was distorting badly.
  • I won’t go into all the details, but it spread to Gayle’s mic as well.
  • We tried all kinds of things…switching their mics, trying corded mics, switching locations for the wireless receivers, changing channels on the front of house board,  changing channels on the back of house board…
  • We never did get it completely resolved but finally went with what was the best of the worst.
  • I’m not discounting some spiritual warfare going on.  I know Satan was not happy that we were going to get serious about some usually not talked about topics so he was doing whatever he could to discourage us.
  • Haha jokes on you Satan…goin have to try harder than that.
  • Other than that it was a good day…a few minor things here and there but nothing major.
  • Of course the big topic of the day was how will Gilbert handle all these questions about marriage, dating, relationships and sex.
  • To be honest, I was not nervous at all because I intentionally was keeping it as biblical as possible with very little personal opinion.
  • Still…talking about things like porn, masturbation and oral sex is not easy…especially with a bunch of people staring at you…and your wife sitting in the crowd…and the director of church planting and executive director of our region of the denomination in the crowd.
  • Still I’m pleased with how it all went.
  • Especially proud of the Wordle Picture that is the picture for this post.  It shows the amount of times a word was used in the message by size.  Notice that even in a message that was pretty edgy, the 4 biggest words are God, Jesus, bible and marriage!
  • I knew it was going to be a long message but I wanted to get as many questions answered as possible.
  • Unfortunately, the live questions via text never made it to me until after the Experience…luckily the broken crock pot question that came in yesterday was still fresh in my mind.
  • So many things I could say about today’s message but you’ll just need to listen for yourself.
  • All in all I was pleased with the response afterward.
  • Had some guys asking for help and the overall response was thank you for being so open and honest about topics like this and keeping it biblical.
  • Honestly I can’t think of any other way to be.
  • Why would you want to go to church only to hear something watered down that makes you simply feel good.
  • Oh wait I remember.
  • Great to have our good friends Bill and Nicole up from WV today to visit and then hang out.
  • Next week we begin a new series called ME*TRADE where we’ll look at what to do when life just seems to be in a rut.
  • Going to be powerful…make sure you invite a lot of people to come along with you!

  • Thank you all so much!
  • We couldn’t have asked for a better send off.
  • The Experiences, party, cards, gifts, plaque, poster, etc all meant so much to Lisa and I.
  • We are emotionally exhausted but praising God for the 3 1/2 years we spent together and the awesome send-off you gave us.
  • Thanks to Thom Lambert for driving me to church this morning.
  • Thanks to Brian, Earl and Aaron for putting together a very moving Experience.
  • Loved all the testimonies and the video’s.
  • Thanks as well to visiting family members and denominational leaders who came in to be a part of the day!
  • Thanks to Chris and Amanda for heading up the party…I’m stuffed!
  • Wow, I’m so tired and my mind is swimming so I’m sure I’m forgetting tons of things and people to thank.
  • In any case, thanks again for a great day and all the support we’ve received.
  • Again we’d appreciate your prayer support.  If you’re interested on being on our prayer team, please e-mail to prayerteam@exponentialchurch.tv
  • Also other ways you can help us financially and thru short term missions trips can be found at the links.
  • I’ll hopefully post some video’s and pics soon, but for now it’s time for a nap and then Lisa and I will be off for a vacation before we start the real work of getting the new church up and running.
  • Thanks again and much love to you all!

Inside Today’s Experiences

March 28, 2010 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • Wrapped up the Littlefaithers series today by looking at the story of Elijah.
  • Again I was able to come in a little later…I could get used to that.
  • Had some things today that were sloppy and that always drives me crazy…however for the most part it was a good day.
  • Had a guy at the second Experience that just moved here from Charlotte.  He has been attending Elevation Church.  I told him I’m no Steven Furtick but he came up afterwards and said he’d be back so I guess I didn’t let me down too bad.
  • Had our regions director of church planting, Chuck Frank, in attendance as well.  Heard a few people “lovingly confronted” him about stealing me away.
  • For such a heavy topic, I thought we did good of sharing God’s Word these past few weeks in a way that was uplifting instead of depressing.
  • Can’t wait for next week…EASTER!
  • So who are you inviting?
  • Pray this week that God will open up the hearts of those you’ll be inviting, that He will open up doors for you to invite and that you will have the courage to open your mouth to make the invite at the appropriate time.
  • Invite like crazy this week…let’s pack the place out and see many have their eternal destinies changed!
