Sacrifice

June 11, 2010 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

Jesus said, “I can guarantee this truth: Anyone who gave up his home, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children, or fields because of me and the Good News
will certainly receive a hundred times as much here in this life.
”  Mark 10:29-30

The picture you see is of my very good friends Andy and Gayle Krull just moments after walking into their new home in Harrisburg, PA this afternoon for the very first time.  Why do they have a new home?  Why are they living in a strange city?  Because they believe so much in following Jesus wherever He may call and they believe so much in the vision God has given me to start ExponentialChurch.tv that they were willing to leave their old world behind.  House, family, friends, jobs, kids schools, a great church and more…all because to them being a part of a major movement of God is more important than personal comfort.  All because Jesus command to Go is more important to them than any personal sacrifice.

Thanks Andy and Gayle for your sacrifice, you are an inspiration to many for your faithfulness to the cause of Christ!

Acts 29

March 25, 2010 by Gilbert 2 Comments

This morning in my personal devotions I finished up reading through the book of Acts.  Every time I do it’s always a wonderful reminder of the hard work and sacrifice that early Christians put in to get the church started and the message of Christ spread.  It’s also a reminder of how utterly useless we are without the help of the Holy Spirit.

However, what I’m always most struck by is the ending…or lack thereof.  If you’ve ever read through, you know that Luke the author goes into great detail for 28 chapters talking about times and places and doesn’t leave any loose ends…until the end that is.  Paul has just been put into a Roman jail and Luke ends by saying, “Paul stayed there for two years bravely preaching about the Kingdom and no one tried to stop him”.  And that’s it!  Done!  What?

Luke how can you leave us hanging like that?  If this were a movie we’d say…”Oh it’s obvious they are setting it up for a sequel”.  Here’s my theory.  There is a sequel called Acts 29 and it covers a period of nearly 2000 years.  It’s still being written and you and I are some of the co-stars.  In other words, Luke intentionally (being directed by the Spirit) abruptly ended his writing because God didn’t ever want us to think the story was done.  Acts 29 is where you and I continue on the work of the early church in making sure the Gospel gets preached throughout the world.  Acts 29 is you and I sacrificing of our time, talent and money so that others might hear the good news of what Jesus has done for us all.

I’ll end with a simple question…Are you off script?

Lot’s of Questions

March 1, 2010 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

I’m sure after my big announcement on Sunday the 28th, many of you have plenty of questions for me.  This week I want to take some time to answer some of them.

  1. Why would you want to leave? The answer is I don’t.  From a very selfish standpoint, I’ve got it good at United.  I love the people I work with on a weekly basis and the people I get to minister to.  In addition Lisa and I love our house and I get paid quite nicely to do something I’m extremely passionate about.  However, Jesus has asked all of us to “deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me”.  The last I checked, cross-bearing means sacrifice.  Jesus before going to the cross prayed and asked God if there was any other way but the cross to fulfill his mission to please do that, yet He said, “not my will be done, let your will be done”.

Ever since God dropped the vision on me for starting a church in Harrisburg back in October, I’ve prayed God if there is another way, please make that clear.  Instead though God has just opened one incredible door after another to confirm beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is His will for us.  To move is going to require sacrifice on Lisa and I’s behalf.  Not only will we be moving, but I’ll be taking a dramatic decrease in pay.  More than likely this will mean Lisa will need to find a job.  In addition we’ll be starting all over from scratch what has taken us years to build at United.  Will it be easy?  No.  Will it be fun?  Sometimes.  Will it be hard work?  Yes.  Are we confident this is what God wants from us?  Yes, yes, 100%, yes.  As I said in the announcement, it would be hypocritical of me to have preached for 3+ years that you need to be 100% devoted to God and always be obedient to Him, but yet then backed down when God asked me to do something that required sacrifice.

2.  But why Harrisburg, why not somewhere closer like Greencastle or Hagerstown? There are a number of reasons.  The primary one is because that’s where God told me to go.  As I’ve joked with a few people during this process that have asked me this question…”Jonah didn’t go to the city God told him to go and that didn’t work out to well for him.  So since God clearly told me Harrisburg…I’m going to Harrisburg”.

Also I believe He chose Harrisburg because the vision He gave me is so big and potentially nation/world changing, that it’s going to require a larger city to pull off.  In the coming days I’ll outline more of what He’s calling us to do, but the vision is not to just reach a city, but to help re-ignite our denomination and to ultimately become a training center for churches all over the US to send others for training.  Now obviously there are a lot of other large cities that God could have called us to, but I think He chose Harrisburg because it is the birthplace of our denomination, and there are a lot of strategic alliances/resources already in place in that area that will make the vision much more likely to succeed.

Lastly, my desire is to do nothing that will in any way hurt the United Worship Experience or Chambersburg First Church of God.  Being too close might have done such a thing so I believe God called me to a place that was not so close to be a hindrance but also not so far away that United and CFCOG can’t help me as well as me help you.

That’s enough for today…keep checking back and I’ll answer more questions throughout the week.  If you have one you’d like for me to answer, let me know so that we can make the transition as smooth as possible for all involved.

Inside Today’s Experiences

October 11, 2009 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • Had a lot of fun today.
  • Any time I get to share vision, I’m especially amped up.
  • Things ran really smoothly today which is always a nice thing.
  • The 9:45 crowd was rocking…love when I can hear you guys singing your hearts out.
  • All the team did an exceptional job…great job guys and gals.
  • Wow for the second week in a row, Gayle made me cry.
  • We are so blessed to have some world class female singers in the church.
  • I love how God takes the words I’ve been preparing with His help for weeks and then transforms them into something completely different on Sunday’s.
  • I felt really good about both messages but they came out so different.
  • Wasn’t sure which one to post, but finally went with the 9:45.
  • My prayer is that this message will sink in and all of us, would see the lost and hurting in our community as our problem.
  • For this week’s Reality Check video with Satan, click here.
  • I’m taking the creative team away this afternoon through tomorrow so we can pray and brainstorm what the 2010 series schedule will look like…keep us in prayer.

6 Habits of Highly Defective People

February 3, 2009 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

One of the best books I ever read was The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  John Maxwell has come up with the opposite…the 6 Habits of Highly Defective People…enjoy.

• They have a losing attitude: People generally get whatever they expect out of life. Expect the worst, and that’s what you’ll get.

• They quit growing. People are what they are, and they are where they are because of what has gone into their minds.

• They have no game plan for life. As William Feather, author of The Business of Life says, “There are two kinds of failures: Those who thought and never did, and those who did and never thought.”

• They are unwilling to change. Some people would rather cling to what they have rather than embrace what might be better because they are afraid of getting something worse.

• They fail in relationships with others. People who cannot get along with others will never get ahead in life.

• They are not willing to pay the price for success. The road to success is uphill all the way. Anyone who wants to accomplish much must sacrifice
