Inside Today’s Experience

March 13, 2011 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • Don’t know if I’ll do this every week, but we’ll call this one, “The Time Change Edition”.
  • This is actually the first time in the past 4 years that the time change has affected me.
  • Why you ask?
  • At my old church I convinced them not to observe the time change until after we were done on Sunday mornings.
  • In other words, everyone got up at the normal time, came to church and then once we were done, everyone moved their clocks forward.
  • It was awesome…you didn’t lose sleep and we even got a write up in the paper about it.
  • The only people it affected were people who had to work around noon, but better to affect a few than affect everyone.
  • Problem is this only works when you have your own building.
  • At the theater we couldn’t do this because it would affect movies.
  • So the morning got started earlier than normal but I felt good because I went to bed earlier last night to try to make up for it.
  • Today was a big day because Andy and Gayle were away for the first time since we launched.
  • For those that don’t know Andy, he’s a tech wiz and designed our system.
  • This is the 3rd church now that Andy and I have been together and not only are we best friends but he gives me a high degree of comfort on Sunday mornings because I know he can handle just about anything thrown at him.
  • However, we’ve assembled a great tech crew at ExponentialChurch.tv and so I wasn’t too concerned unless something completely out of the ordinary happened.
  • When you’re doing portable church that’s not completely out of the question, but today we got lucky…or prayer really does work.  :)
  • We ran into a few minor problems but the team of Mike, Cris, and Benji were able to handle it.
  • Great job guys and gal!
  • All in all the entire day went very smoothly.  The band did great as usual…the flow of the day went well…our volunteers are world class…I felt good about today’s message…just one problem…
  • Hardly anyone was there.
  • I’m talking we just barely had half the normal size crowd.
  • Had a few of those tell me that unless they had gotten my email reminder they would have forgotten as well.
  • My feeling is two things were at play…
  • First, many people just forgot the time change…already gotten some messages to that regard.
  • Second, we’re doing a pretty good job of reaching people who either have no church background or little church background.
  • While they’re making good spiritual process either as now baby Christians or investigating the claims of Jesus…church attendance still isn’t high on their list and even the slightest little thing (like the time change) can get them out of rhythm.
  • That’s one of the challenges of doing “church for people that don’t like church” but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
  • Regardless of the small crowd, we still had 2 more people today pray to become followers of Jesus!
  • My first pastor used to say that if you don’t preach the same regardless of the crowd size then you’re probably doing it for the wrong reason.
  • I’ve always remembered that and so whether it’s a small crowd like today or 13000+, I always try to preach, speak and teach to individuals in the crowd so it doesn’t matter how many total are in attendance.
  • That philosophy has served me well not to get discouraged by small crowds and too nervous for big ones.
  • Again today was excellent…sorry so many missed it.
  • Jump online to listen to the message about the “One Simple Truth” that will transform your life.
  • And don’t forget we’re still in the midst of reading the Book of John together as a church.  Today is John 7, tomorrow John 8 and so on.
  • Then go to the Exponential Facebook Discussion page to share your thoughts via the SOAP method.  Not sure what that is?  It’s all explained online.

Random Thoughts

March 10, 2010 by Gilbert 1 Comment

Been awhile since I a random thoughts post.  Here we go…

  • Excited about the 60+ resumes that have come in to take over for me at United.
  • Couple of potentially good candidates in that stack.  Pray for the search team to find the right person.
  • Balancing my full-time responsibilities I still have at CFCOG along with starting a new church is interesting.
  • I have a follow-up meeting this Friday with a man that owns one of the buildings we’re looking at.   Please pray about that.
  • We have two really good but vastly different options when it comes to where we’re going to meet.
  • Speaking of buildings, if you know anyone who’s looking to buy a house, steer them our way.  Here’s the listing for our house.
  • Excited about the new series we’re starting this weekend called, Littlefaither:  The Worry Wart Series.
  • Don’t forget we ARE NOT changing our clocks this weekend until after the Sunday morning Experiences.
  • Love that we do this…why lose an hour’s sleep when you don’t have to!
  • It’s amazing the speed I can rip through a whole box of Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookies.
  • What’s even more amazing is how quickly I can go through two boxes!  :)
  • Really enjoying the warmer weather!
  • I know NASCAR said they we’re going to let the boys be boys this year but the whole Carl Edwards thing was a bit ridiculous.
  • When someone dies in the future they are going to have a lawsuit on their hands for being accomplices in a homicide.
  • The lawyer will argue that because they didn’t do anything about it now, others felt it was ok and the result was death.
  • Speaking of sports, my Caps are kicking some serious butt.  Hope they don’t use up all there good game play in the regular season then falter in the play-offs.
  • Ok, one last sports thing…sorry ladies once my mind goes there it’s hard to stop…This week and the next two are arguably the best all year round.  Can’t wait for March Madness to start…especially since my Terps are playing so well!
  • Now back to our regularly scheduled blog, already in progress…
  • The Toyota with the stuck gas pedal thing had to have been quite frightening…did you see the guys face after he got out and was being interviewed.
  • I think he was in a need of a change of underwear!
  • Can’t believe there are only 9 more episodes of LOST.
  • Please writers don’t let us down…we’ve stuck with you this long…give us a good conclusion or I’ll send the smoke monster to your house.
  • Glad Idol isn’t 5 hours a week anymore.  Even with the ability to speed things up on the DVR, that is still crazy.
  • I really liked Andrew, but he’s been a disappointment recently.  Now I’m thinking a girl might win it…Crystal?
  • Guess that’s enough for now…have a great day!

Inside Today’s Experience

March 8, 2009 by Gilbert Leave a Comment

  • What a contrast to last week…in more ways than one.
  • The weather today is incredible and unlike last week all aspects of set-up went very well.
  • Not sure though the extra hour of sleep helped though…even though we didn’t move our clocks forward, everyone seemed a bit lethargic.
  • I know some were fighting colds…Aaron was a real trooper battling through both Experiences despite a bad cold.
  • Had a record crowd for the 9:15…think we picked up some of the 10:45 crowd because attendance was down there although overall attendance was about average.
  • Here are some links I mentioned in today’s message…
    • Spiritual Gifts Test.
    • United Promo video on the United site.
    • United Promo video on Youtube.
    • United Review on Church Visit web-site.
  • Now you know why I don’t sing!
  • A lot of fun though with everyone singing along…especially the “Nobody Bothers Me” commercial.
  • At 10:45 though I started in a key higher than I should have an just barely made it through “Zacchaeus Was a Wee Little Man”.
  • I promise no more singing for awhile.
  • A big thanks to Dan Fry, Jenny Shilfer and Missy Kibbe for their testimonies during this series.
  • Can’t wait until next week and the kick-off to the “You Asked For It” series.
  • The creative team has some great surprises in store…don’t forget to invite someone.

    Random Saturday Thoughts

  • Let me start by reminding you…DO NOT SET YOUR CLOCKS FORWARD!
  • We will all do this together after church on Sunday morning.
  • Enjoy the extra hour of sleep that you would have lost otherwise.
  • It was an interesting week…lots going on.
  • Thursday we had CPR training as a staff as well as learning how to use the AED device to shock people’s hearts back into rhythm.
  • Man…hope I never have to do either of those things.
  • Great to have the team from Haiti back home…sounds like they had a great time and got much accomplished.
  • RIP…Circuit City.
  • I can’t wait for the “You Asked For It” series to start on the 15th.
  • We’ve got some surprises in store for you that should be a lot of fun!
  • I’m so glad that the judges did not bring back Tatiana on American Idol…that girl was big time annoying.
  • I’m loving my new phone…it’s helping me to be more productive with time since I can check e-mails and stuff basically anywhere.
  • Mmm…also means my workaholic, Type A personality can work even more hours…maybe this isn’t such a good thing.
  • I’ll finish reading “A Whack on the Side of the Head” today…loved it!
  • Enjoy your nice spring like day…see you tomorrow…again at normal time.
